The street anthropology is identical with the anthropology of urban life. In the past, a street was a place to socialize and, on equal footing with its architecture, it was part of the cultural identity of its inhabitants. The street reflects residents’ social, cultural and economic capital. Over time, mobility and communication accessibility have dominated the urban spatial policy. The contemporary street has become a "space of flows". The restoration of its original role requires a more balanced approach to cultural factors that determine the quality of life in a city. The article discusses characteristic features that determine patterns of mobility in modern streets.

Antropologia ulicy jest antropologią życia miejskiego. Dawna ulica była miejscem kontaktów społecznych i na równi z jej architekturą stanowiła element tożsamości kulturowej mieszkańców. Odzwierciedla ich kapitał społeczny, kulturowy i ekonomiczny. Politykę przestrzenną miast zdominowała problematyka mobilności i komunikacyjnej dostępności terenów. Współczesna ulica stała się – „przestrzenią przepływów”. Przywrócenie jej pierwotnej roli wymaga bardziej zrównoważonego podejścia do kulturowych uwarunkowań jakości życia w mieście. Przedstawiono listę cech identyfikujących wzorce mobilności współczesnych ulic.

Tytułowa parafraza znanego przysłowia: „Pokaż mi swój dom, a powiem ci, skąd jesteś” najpełniej obrazuje tematykę niniejszego artykułu. Autorka stawia hipotezę, że kultury, z jakimi człowiek obcuje w swoim życiu, są twórczymi siłami kształtującymi architekturę domów jednorodzinnych, nadając jej jasno sprecyzowane cechy charakterystyczne. Dowiedzenie tej tezy następuje poprzez autorską ocenę trzech przykładów domów pochodzących z różnych regionów i kultur. Pierwszym z nich jest „dom w norweskich klimatach” powstały na terenie Polski w podwarszawskim Józefosławiu, kolejnym dom architekta W. Rybczyńskiego, ostatnim zaś kanaryjski dom - La Casa Ruiz. Przytoczone przykłady, mimo pozornych różnic, potwierdzają zależność pomiędzy formą domu a wzorcami kulturowymi. Praca ta jest subiektywną interpretacją dowodów dotyczących sposobu, w jaki ludzie organizują i używają przestrzeni mieszkalnej. Rozważania nad relacją kultury i architektury zostały wzbogacone o spostrzeżenia teoretyków architektury, socjologów, filozofów, a nawet przemyślenia poetów. Interdyscyplinarne podejście do tematu wielu obserwatorów różnej specjalności ma na celu określenie porządku w tej bardzo złożonej dziedzinie, a tym samym stworzenie lepszego zrozumienia form.

The title paraphrase of the well-known proverb: “Show me your house and I’ll tell you where you are from” the best illustrates the theme of this article. The author presents hypotheses, that cultures, which man associates in his life, are the creative forces, which are shaping the architecture of single-family houses and giving it a clearly defined characteristics. Proving the thesis takes place through the presentation of three examples of houses from different regions and cultures. The first of them is the “house in the norwegian climates” which was built in Poland, in Józefosław. The second description shows architect W. Rybczynski’s house. The last one example is the Canarian house - La Casa Ruiz. Examples quoted, in spite of the seeming differences, confirmed the dependence between the form of the house and cultural patterns. This paper is a subjective interpretation of the evidence concerning the manner in which people organize and use living space. Considerations on the relationship of culture and architecture are also enriched by insights of many observers of different specialties: architectural theorists, sociologists, philosophers, and even reflections of some poets. Interdisciplinary approach aims to determine the order in this very complex field and thus a better understanding of the forms.
