Renovation of community cinemas as an opportunity

The starting point of this essay is a multidisciplinary study conducted by the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies of the Politecnico di Milano regarding the opportunities for the revitalisation of the almost 800 Community Cinemas owned by the Italian Catholic Church. These cinemas represent the local communities and are an important part of the contemporary Italian urban environment. Research shows that cinemas are threatened by how people currently consume audio-visual content, that there is a need to rethink the projection theatres as social gathering spaces open to the twenty-first-century neighbourhood, thanks to some features innate in the Community Cinemas that can be enhanced. Four case studies have been identified that represent the most common (or widest variation of) size and general layout among the 800 existing situations. A general model has been developed through the radical re-shaping of the space in accordance with new urban and social functions and implementing new technologies. By designing these case-study project solutions, it was possible to define that a new model of multipurpose social centre merged with a more traditional projection room is not only possible, but thanks to state-of-the-art technologies could represent a perfect match and an opportunity to make significant changes throughout a community.

W Olsztynie znajduje się zabytkowy żydowski Dom Oczyszczeń Bet Tahara wybudowany w 1913 r. wg debiutanckiego projektu światowej sławy architekta Ericha Mendelsohna. Najcenniejszym elementem budowli jest samonośne ostrosłupowe sklepienie nad salą pożegnań. W artykule opisano konstrukcję obiektu, jego stan techniczny przed renowacją, projekt i adaptację na cele użyteczności publicznej – Centrum Dialogu Międzykulturowego DOM MENDELSOHNA. Przedsięwzięcie, które jest przykładem rewaloryzacji obiektu o dużej zdolności rewitalizacyjnej, było możliwe dzięki zaangażowaniu Stowarzyszenia Wspólnota Kulturowa Borussia (dzierżawca budynku) i pozyskaniu dofinansowania ze środków publicznych.

The historic Jewish Purification House Bet Tahara was erected in Olsztyn in 1913 on the basis of the debut design of Erich Mendelsohn, aworld – famous architect born in Olsztyn. The most valuable element of the building is a self-supporting pyramid vault above a farewell room. The paper presents an interesting structure of the building, its technical condition before renovation, as well as design and execution of the adaptation into a public utility building – MENDELSOHN HOUSE Intercultural Dialogue Centre. The undertaking, an example of regeneration of a building of a big revitalization capacity, was executed thanks to the commitment of the building’s leaseholder – „Borussia” Cultural Community Association which attracted money for this goal from public funds.

Częstym elementem krajobrazu europejskich i amerykańskich miast epoki postindustrialnej są browary. Wiele z tych obiektów poddanych zostało w ostatnich latach rewitalizacji. Bardzo często obiekty te leżą w ścisłych centrach miast. Niemal regułą jest, że w poszukiwaniu funkcji dla tych obiektów sięga się do idei konglomeratów łączących funkcje handlowe, biurowe, ale niemal zawsze z dominującą rolą kultury. Magia tych miejsc sprawia, że stają się magnesem przyciągającym ludzi twórczych i aktywnych, kreując tym samym nową wartość. Mamy w Polsce kilka takich dobrych przykładów, ale wciąż jeszcze wiele zabytkowych browarów czeka, by tchnąć w nie na nowo światło i życie.

Many historical breweries in European and American cities of the post-industrial era have undergone revitalization in recent years. Very often, these objects are in the strict city centers. It seems to be a rule, that these objects are converted into the conglomerates combining the retail, financial, and office features, but almost always with the dominant role of culture. In Poland we have several good examples of such revitalizations, but still many old breweries are waiting to infuse new light and life into them.
