How long the cruise ship is staying in port? Does that value change during the year? Is the period linked to the number of passengers and the size of the ship? What influences overall period of the stay in port? These questions are just a sample of questions appeared before the research team which tried to establish rules of the Cruise ships seasonal pattern on the East Coast of the Adriatic Sea several questions appeared. Answers to cited questions are presented in this article, obtained by analysing the behaviour of cruise vessels in three biggest ports on the East Coast of the Adriatic Sea during the period of two years.

Według raportu Cruise Line International Assoctiation w 2012 r. rynek turystyki na statkach wycieczkowych w Europie dał zatrudnienie prawie 159,000 osób i wygenerował wydatki bezpośrednie na poziomie 15,5 mld euro, przy czym 3.9 mld stanowiły wydatki na budowę nowych wycieczkowców, konserwację i renowację istniejących jednostek w Europejskich stoczniach, 6.6 mld – to wydatki armatorów związane z rejsami, 3,6 mld - wydatki pasażerów i załogi statków, a 1,4 mld – stanowiły płace i premie dla pracowników [12, s.6]. W świecie prowadzone są badania wpływu ekonomicznego rynku turystyki na statkach wycieczkowych na rozwój gospodarki regionów nadmorskich i krajów. Monitoruje się dane dotyczące liczby miejsc pracy bezpośrednio lub pośrednio związanych z obsługą statków pasażerskich, wysokość zarobków pracowników, a także wysokość i strukturę wydatków pasażerów i załogi statków w miejscach zawinięć. Ponadto analizie poddawane są wydatki armatorów linii wycieczkowych w związku z korzystaniem z infrastruktury portowej i usług. W literaturze polskiej jest luka w zakresie analizy zjawiska wpływu ekonomicznego rynku turystyki na statkach wycieczkowych na gospodarkę. Wciąż w Polsce niedoceniana jest rola, jaką ten sektor gospodarki turystycznej odgrywa w rozwoju regionów nadmorskich. Celem artykułu jest próba oceny wpływu rynku turystyki na statkach wycieczkowych na rozwój obszarów nadmorskich. W pracy wykorzystano metody analizy porównawczej i badania typu „desk research” danych i raportów z badań światowych organizacji.

In accordance with CLIA Europe in 2012, the cruise industry in Europe created nearly 159,000 direct jobs and “generated direct expenditures of €15.5 billion. These expenditures included the following: €3.9 billion in spending for the construction of new cruise ships and the maintenance and refurbishment of existing ships with European shipyards,€6.6 billion in spending by cruise lines with European businesses for goods and services in support of their cruise operations, €3.6 billion in cruise passenger and crew spending and €1.4 billion in wages 2980 and salaries plus benefits were paid to the European administrative staff and crew of the cruise lines”[12, s.6]. In the world, there are conducted the market research regarding the economic impact of the cruise ship industry on development of local and state economy in the coastal regions. The analysis focus on data concerning the number of jobs direct and indirect connected with cruise ship industry, staff wages, and also the amount and structure of the passengers’ and employees’ expenditures in the places visited. Moreover, there are analyzed the total expenditures of cruise lines in connection with the use of the port infrastructure and services. In Polish literature, there is the lack of analysis regarding the phenomenon of economic impact of the cruise ship tourism on the economy. In Poland, the role of the tourism sector in the development of coastal regions is still underestimated. The purpose of the article is an attempt to assess the impact of cruise ship tourism for the development of coastal regions. In the article the results of survey conducted by the author have been used and a critical analysis, a comparative analysis and also the available Polish and foreign literature and reports in this field were researched.

Cruise ship tourism is an important segment of the maritime tourism market. “Cruising, according to CLIA (Cruise Line International Association), is one of the safest, most affordable and enjoyable vacation experiences available today and the industry continually reviews best practices and develops innovative technologies to further strengthen its safety record. A record 20 million – plus global passengers went on a cruise in 2012” [1]. In addition, this branch of industry has also generated thousands of jobs at sea and in the ports of calls and has brought huge incomes for local economies in visited tourist destinations. The main objective of this article is to assess the state of development of cruise ships tourism in Poland. In the first part of the article, there are included analysis of the number of cruise ship calls and passengers and there were also presented the largest cruise vessels that have visited seaports in Poland. There is also described the state of preparation of the seaports in Poland to support cruise ships. Moreover, there are also discussed the scope of services of the seaports in Poland, offered to ship-owners and a range of fees which must be borne by them. In addition, there are presented entities involved in handling of cruise ships while staying at the seaports. The article ends with a summary where it was indicated, inter alia, the reasons for the decreasing trend in the number of calls of cruise ships in Polish seaports.
