In search of unified warehouse designing method

Both scientific journals and academic books present many warehouse designing methods. This diversity shows differences in approach to designing process. This is a consequence of the fact that methods are results of authors' different points of view. A critical review of the literature proves that most of the proposed designing methods are fragmentary and their designing steps are not put in a logical order. Finally some methods seem to be functional specification rather than designing methods. Therefore it is highly desirable to achieve systematisation of existing methods, to add new facets and aspects of warehouse designing and consequently try to develop a unified method. The literature review of the problem led to a critical review of the warehouse designing methods. It is precisely described in the paper. The critical review resulted in answering the question whether to develop the new method or not.

The article looks at the function of the quantity surveyor in the occupational structure. New deregulation changes regarding this occupation are specified and an analysis of the occupational environment related to the abiding law is presented.

A study into occurrence of fire in opencast workings over developed coal pillars and evolving control parameters for its safe extraction

In India, a number of opencast mines are being worked over the coal pillars developed by underground bord and pillar method of mining. In these cases, the fires have occurred in most of these opencast mines causing loss of the coal reserve, production, productivity and safety. In this research work, 13 such mines have been studied over a period of three years and critical parameters for occurrence of these fires have been identified. This paper presents the details of observations for two such mines and detailed statistical analyses have been carried out by using confidence interval (C.I.) and analysis of variance (ANOVA-Two-way classification) for finding out the range of these critical parameters which can be controlled to reduce the occurrence of these fires.

W wielu kopalniach odkrywkowych w Indiach wydobycie prowadzi się w wyrobiskach ponad filarami ochronnymi udostępnianymi przy wykorzystaniu metody filarowo-komorowej. W takich warunkach powstające często w kopalniach pożary powodują utratę zasobów węglowych, zmniejszenie wydajności i poziomu wydobycia oraz negatywnie wpływają na bezpieczeństwo pracy. W artykule tym przeanalizowano przypadki 13 kopalni odkrywkowych na przestrzeni trzech lat, zidentyfikowano krytyczne parametry dla określenia możliwości wystąpienia pożaru. Artykuł przedstawia dokładne obserwacje poczynione w dwóch kopalniach, poparte szczegółową analizą statystyczną z zastosowaniem przedziałów ufności i analizy wariancji (ANOVA - klasyfikacja dwukierunkowa) do określenia wartości parametrów krytycznych w celu zminimalizowania ryzyka wystąpienia pożarów.

Geological classification of the rocky landslides in the Polish Flysch Carpathians is rather oversimplified and incorrectly used. This is especially the case of the "structural landslide" type and related terminology, which are too often used by researchers also for description of landslides which are not displaced along structural discontinuities developed in strongly anisotropic flysch rock massifs. Such an approach has been used by a number of authors and is the reason why deep-seated landslides were commonly incorrectly characterized and classified as "structural" ones. The studies of the Carpathian rocky landslides recently conducted by the author with the use of tectonic analysis, confirmed occurrence of all the types of mass movements including toppling, lateral spreading, translational and rotational and compound slides and rock flow as well as the complex landslide which represents the combined type of various gravitational displacements according to the classification of International Geotechnical Societies'UNESCO Working Party on World Landslide Inventory. In the light of this classification, the structural landslide represents only one type of these phenomena, i.e. translational landslide. In the article, the author tries to elaborate proper definition and description of the "structural landslide" criteria sensu Kleczkowski (1955) and Bober (1984).
