Svanbergite in Sichuan Province, China is a special middle-low grade phosphorus ore. It contains rare earth elements (REEs), aluminum, and strontium that can be exploited and utilized. In this study, several methods were used to systematically study the occurrence of REEs in the ore and basic ore characteristics. The ore, which was rich in REEs, Al, and Sr, was classified as marine sedimentary low-grade phosphorus ore. The main ore mineral was crandallite and pyrite, and independent REE minerals were not found. Crandallite was the main carrier mineral of useful elements, including P, REEs, Al, and Sr. REE+ was inferred to mainly exist in crandallite via isomorphism by replacing Ca2+ and H+. The crandallite was mainly characterized as fine-grained, and minerals were closely disseminated. The results from this study will provide a valuable reference for expanding available REE resources and the efficient comprehensive utilization of svanbergite.

Samples of Lower Devonian vertebrate-bearing placoderm sandstones collected in a quarry at Podłazie Hill in the Holy Cross Mountains, central Poland, were found to contain numerous white and brownish aggregates of an unknown composition. Powder X-Ray Diffraction study has shown them to comprise plumbogummite group minerals (PGM). Gorceixite is most common, usually forming compact/porous aggregates. They are either found in voids within the quartz-rich zircon-, muscovite- and biotite-bearing matrix, or as a complete replacement after bone remnants. Goyazite aggregates are similar but rarer. Strontian crandallite is found as tiny zoned crystals closely associated with compact gorceixite (in the sandstone matrix) or as cores of fine-grained gorceixite aggregates (within the bones). All of the PGMs are enriched in Ce and La with two analyses marginally within the compositional field of florencite-(Ce). Ca enrichment, elevated F content and abundance of goyazite within the bone replacement suggest the primary bone apatite group as the source of these elements. Tuffites and claystones associated with the sandstones are probably the source of Ba and Sr, while Pb is possibly derived from local Devonian mineralisation.

Przeprowadzono badania pstrych utworów powstałych, w wyniku wietrzenia pokarbońskiego, z iłowców i niżejległego węgla warstw siodłowych (środkowy namur) niecki chwałowickiej (KWK "Marcel", pokład węgla 505, głębokość 200 m). Rozpoznany skład mineralny tych utworów, a zwłaszcza najbardziej genetycznie wskaźnikowy, rezyduum powęglowego i brekcji zawałowej (illit, kaolinit-D, hematyt, goethyt, minerały szeregu crandallit-gorceixyt-goyazyt, syderyt, kwarc, smektyt lub minerał mieszanopakietowy illit/smektyt, boehmit? hydrotalkit?)

The authors have investigated red beds strata from the Anticlinal Beds (Middle Namurian) in the Chwałowice Trough ("Marcel" mine, No 505 seam, the depth 200 m). The rocks originated as a result of post-Carboniferous weathering from Carboniferous claystones and underlying coal. The mineral composition of these rocks is genetically most indicative in the residuum after coal weathering and the collapsed breccia and includes: illite, kaolinite-D, haematite, goethite, minerals of the crandallite-gorceixite-goyasite group, siderite, quartz, smectite or illite/smectite mixed layer mineral, boehmite (?), hydrotalcite (?). The mineral assemblage indicates Iow or, at the most, medium temperatures of its formation. The weathering processes were not much advanced (the strongest changes took place at the border between coal and the claystones of the bed No 3) and limited to partial removal of coal as well as carbonates and sulphides of iron, contained within this coal and the overlying rocks. The effects of epigenetic factors were weaker and expressed in cementation of small fractures.
