Methodology for research on traffic safety at signalized intersections with countdown timers

The article is a presentation of the authors‘ research work on determining the impact of countdown timers on traffic conditions, and - in this case - on the level of traffic safety at intersections. Therefore, the scientific aim of the article is to present the methodology used by the authors to carry out research in order to determine the influence of the function of the intersection with countdown timers within an urban transportation network on the level of safety at the intersection. To achieve the scientific objectives, measurements of traffic at three intersections with different functions in a transportation network have been performed.

Analysis of selected methodological problems regarding the examination of traffic events at road intersections

The planning of statistical examining of population within the scope of undesirable events at road intersections with three-colour traffic lights has been discussed. In particular, the problems have been raised that are related to the analysing how the installation of countdown timers showing the time left to a change in the traffic lights signal affects the traffic flow. Attention has been focused on selected research process elements that concern the preliminary works, examination proper, and statistical inference, without describing the types and engineering designs of the displays used and without dealing with the legal aspects. Selected literature items related to the subject matter touched upon have been analysed, with pointing out the practices that either might be desirable or might arouse some reservations. In the part concerning the preliminary works, such issues as the sample selection method, sample size, and selection of the variables under analysis have been discussed. As regards the examination proper, some elements of the information acquisition process have been considered in both the subject-related and object-related aspects. When discussing the statistical inference, some limitations have been pointed out that affect the conclusions drawn from the examination of statistically non-representative samples and some acceptable methods of the analysis of empirical data have been mentioned. The article has been concluded with a brief recapitulation.

Analiza zasadności stosowania liczników czasu na skrzyżowaniach drogowych z sygnalizacją świetlną na przykładzie Słupska

W artykule przedstawiono problem zasadności montowania na skrzyżowaniach drogowych z sygnalizacją świetlną dodatkowych liczników czasu, odmierzających czas do zmiany sygnału. Przeanalizowane zostały również podobne rozwiązania stosowane na świecie oraz uregulowania prawne obowiązujące w Polsce. Z uwagi na brak ogólnodostępnych badań świadczących na korzyść lub niekorzyść stosowania liczników czasu, przeprowadzone zostały autorskie badania na skrzyżowaniach w ciągu ulicy Szczecińskiej w Słupsku oraz ankiety wśród pieszych i kierowców Słupska. Celem badań jest sprawdzenie zachowania się kierowców w podobnych sytuacjach występujących na skrzyżowaniach z zainstalowanymi licznikami czasu, jak i na skrzyżowaniach o zbliżonym natężeniu ruchu bez liczników.

The article presents the problem with countdown timers at intersections with traffic lights. Similar solutions applied all over the world and the legislation process in Poland have been analysed. Due to the lack of public research resulting with opinions for or against implementation of countdown timers, the author has conducted a poll at the intersections in Słupsk. The research has included surveys among pedestrians and drivers. Also measurement of the driver’s behavior at intersections along the Szczecińska street in Słupsk has been carried. The aim of the research is to test the behavior of drivers in similar situations at intersections with countdown timers and at intersections with similar traffic intensity without countdown timers.
