A new kind of 125I seeds with a core-shell structure were synthesized by an easy assembling–disassembling coaxial capillaries microfluidic device. The dose distribution of a 125I brachytherapy source fabricated by arranging six 125I seeds collinearly within a cylindrical titanium capsule was simulated by modelling the source in a water phantom using Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport code. The infl uence of the motion and the core size of the 125I seeds on the dose distribution was also studied in this work.

The equivalent truss method has been known for years as a numerical model used in problems with structural optimization. It is often implemented in computational algorithms based on cellular automation (CA). This method (CA) is highly versatile and allows the modelling of phenomena which occur in multiple dimensional scales, including material engineering issues. This paper describes a numerical model used to simulate the stress caused by the external load in a multi-phase material. The authors propose applying the algorithm in modelling the behavior of alloy materials following a thermal treatment which leads to precipitate hardening.

Core-shell SiO2/Ag composite spheres with dense, complete and nanoscaled silver shell were prepared by using a novel facile chemical reduction method without surface modification of silica at room temperature. The core-shell composites were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-Vis spectroscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The photocatalytic properties towards the degradation of methyl orange (Mo) of the prepared SiO2//Ag composites were also tested. The studies showed that the surface of SiO2/ microspheres was homogeneously and completely covered by Ag nanoparticles and the composite exhibited excellent photocatalytic activities. The possible reaction mechanisms for the formation of the silica-silver core-shell spheres were also discussed in this paper.

Core-shell fibres of semi-crystalline poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) (core) and amorphous poly(D,L-lactic acid) (PDLLA) (shell) were produced through the coaxial electrospinning of two miscible solutions. Due to the poor contrast between the PDLLA and PLLA, the core-shell structure of the resulting fibres could not be elucidated using TEM. An indirect visualisation method was devised consisting of a combination of SEM, selective dissolution, polarimetry and DSC. The method is evaluated here and applied in the investigation of the effect of spin solution concentration and flow rate on the morphology of the resulting fibers.
