Improving Performance through Third-Party Logistics (3PL) Providers: an Empirical Investigation of Jordanian Trading Companies

Relating to the accelerated development in the world of business, third-party logistics (3PL) providers have globally become a prevalent practice among many organizations, particularly among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). According to extant studies, the most common four logistics services usually provided through 3PLs (outsourced) are: delivery service, supplying, warehousing, and transportation services. With that being said, this paper presents an analysis of the SME outsourcing practice among a sample of Jordanian trading companies and the posited impact on the performance of their outsourcing efforts.

Logistyka kontraktowa stwarza określone możliwości pozyskiwania zewnętrznych zasobów logistycznych na rzecz wojsk, tym samym zwiększania potencjału logistycznego Sił Zbrojnych Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej co autor uznał za istotny cel badań. Niekiedy podejmowane są działania, w ramach systemów logistycznych sił zbrojnych, bezrefleksyjnie naśladujące rozwiązania biznesowe. Nie oznacza to, że należy zrezygnować z prowadzenia badań i wdrażania praktycznych rozwiązań do tych systemów bazujących na teorii i praktyce logistyki gospodarczej. Artykuł zawiera wyniki badań koncentrujące się na ogólnej charakterystyce podmiotów zewnętrznych jako źródle zasobów logistycznych dla SZ RP, istocie logistyki kontraktowej, logistyce kontraktowej jako przedsięwzięciu w wojskowym systemie logistycznym, logistyce kontraktowej jako determinancie relacji w terytorialnym systemie zabezpieczenia logistycznego wojsk. Artykuł przedstawia wyniki badań osiągnięte w oparciu o podejście systemowe do logistyki, przy czym wykorzystano analizę systemową i analizę porównawczą jako główne metody badań. Wykorzystano także fragmenty wyników badań własnych, które autor przeprowadził metodą delficką w latach 2010-2011.

Contract logistics creates specific opportunities to acquire external logistic resources for the benefit of the army, thereby to increase the logistics potential of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland, which the author considered as an important research goal. Sometimes actions are taken, within the framework of logistic systems of the armed forces, which imitate business solutions without reflection. This does not mean that one should give up conducting research and implementing practical solutions to these systems based on the theory and practice of economic logistics. The article contains the results of research focusing on the general characteristics of external entities as a source of logistic resources for the Polish Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland, the essence of contract logistics, contract logistics as a venture in the military logistic system, contract logistics as a determinant of relations in the territorial logistics support system of the army. The article presents the results of research based on a system approach to logistics, using system analysis and comparative analysis as the main research methods. Fragments of own research results were also used, which the author carried out using the Delphi method in 2010-2011.

W niniejszym artykule określono, czym jest outsourcing w logistyce oraz jaki jest podział usług logistycznych, które zostają przekazane firmom zewnętrznym. Omówiono również jeden z rodzajów usług świadczonych na rynku logistycznym, jakim jest logistyka kontraktowa.

Theoretical basis for this article is to define the concept of outsourcing and the benefits and risks associated with its use. This article sets out what is outsourcing in logistics and what is the division of logistics services, which are given to outside companies. It also discusses one of the types of services provided in the logistics marketwhich is the contract logistics.

Celem referatu było wykazanie, iż przedsiębiorstwa zaliczane do polskiego sektora MŚP nawiązują ścisłe relacje z usługodawcami logistycznymi w ramach logistyki kontraktowej. Został określony zakres funkcji, które to powszechnie zlecane są do wykonania zewnętrznym wykonawcom oraz postawiona teza o zależności ilości i struktury przekazywanych funkcji od dostępności danego podmiotu MŚP do usługodawców logistycznych. Głównym założeniem referatu było określenie dostępności podmiotów MŚP do usług logistycznych oraz wpływu jaki poziom tej dostępności wywiera na wybór określonego modelu logistyki kontaktowej. Założono także, iż czynnikami warunkującymi trwałość analizowanych relacji są: zaangażowanie przedsiębiorstwa sektora MŚP i usługodawcy logistycznego oraz jakość i terminowość, które wpływają na poziom satysfakcji i korzyści płynących z tych relacji.

Showing that enterprises included to the Polish SMEs sector are establishing close relations with logistic service providers within contract logistics was a purpose of the paper. A scope of the function which are being universally commissioned to do outside stayed defined and thesis about the dependence of the amount and the structure of functions handed over on the availability of SMEs subject from logistic contractors was put. Determining the approachability of SMEs entities to logistic service and what level of this availability is exerting influence on choice of the specific model of the contact logistics was main assumption. The author has assumed, that involvement of the SMEs sector enterprises and logistic service providers and the quality and the timeliness which affect on the level of satisfaction and benefits resulted from these relations are factors that determinate persistency of analyzed relations.
