This study traced a deployed real IT system to enhance occupational safety for a polluted confined space. By incorporating wireless technology, it automatically monitors the status of workers on the site and upon detected anomalous events, managers are notified effectively. The system, with a redefined standard operations process, is running well at one of Formosa Petrochemical Corporation's refineries. Evidence shows that after deployment, the system does enhance the safety level by real-time monitoring the workers and by managing well and controlling the anomalies. Therefore, such technical architecture can be applied to similar scenarios for safety enhancement purposes.

Content available remote Practical uses of sound auralization in confined spaces

Practical aspects of testing confined spaces, especially for the purpose of acoustic adaptations, are presented. The tests were carried out with use of prediction models, showing the possibilities of models that are used at present. Sound auralization, which is a reliable method for the assessment of sound signal quality and the acoustic conditions of tested rooms, is described. The basic criteria for the assessment of acoustic conditions in confined spaces are briefly discussed.

W artykule przedstawiono praktyczne aspekty badań przestrzeni zamkniętych, zwłaszcza na potrzeby realizacji adaptacji akustycznych. Badania te prowadzono z użyciem modeli predykcji, obrazując jednocześnie możliwości stosowanych obecnie modeli. Opisano auralizację dźwięku, która jest wiarygodną metodą oceny jakości sygnału dźwiękowego, a co za tym idzie, także i warunków akustycznych badanych pomieszczeń. Skrótowo omówiono podstawowe wskaźniki oceny warunków akustycznych w przestrzeniach zamkniętych.

Content available remote Vaporization heat transfer in porous wicks of evaporators

The experimental investigation of two-phase heat transfer in porous cylindrical element of the evaporator typical for heat transfer enhancement and its cooling efficiency. Propane was chosen as working fluid. The data obtained for a flooded and partially flooded horizontal tube with a sintered capillary-porous coating are analyzed to compare with the data of heat transfer for the tube disposed between two vertical plates with side mini-gaps and inside the coaxial tube with low gap (near 2 mm).

Boiling heat transfer characteristics of water has been experimentally and analytically examined in a vertical small diameter tube, D = 1.45 mm, L = 100 mm at sub-atmospheric pressures of 5, 11, and 22 kPa under natural circulation condition. Distinct S-shape boiling curves with three different slopes: a slope similar to pool boiling at a low heat flux, a negative slope at a medium heat flux and a slope smaller than that of pool boiling at a high heat flux, have been observed. Comparing the experimental vapour flux with the predicted one, the flow regime might have been annular within our experimental range. Pool boiling correlation of Stephan- Abdelsalam and a boiling correlation of Imura, et al. developed for a thermosyphon correlated well the measured data at low and medium heat flux regions. In the region of high heat flux a large boiling heat transfer enhancement is indicated in the form of S-shape curves. Predictions of heat transfer coefficient by conduction through the thin liguid film gave good results in the region of high heat flux.
