Content available remote Quantitative tests-based assessment of biomedical image enhancement procedures

This paper describes a novel method of images enhancement procedures evaluation. A necessity of such method follows from the fact that the results of morphological or statistical image analysis in medical and/or technological applications strongly depend on the effectiveness of image preprocessing. The proposed method is based on standard images called testing sets composed of several basic patterns. Filtered testing sets are compared to basic patterns and the averaged distances between them are used as primary filtering quality scores. Then, they are used to calculation of several secondary parameters called image restoration errors. The image restoration errors make possible separate characterization of filters' ability to improve image contrast, discrimination of small details or neglect the influence of image parallel shifts on the visibility of image details. Practical application of the proposed method is illustrated by example of comparison of the quality of three exemplary filters: a one based on second-level morphological spectra, Laplace and Sobel, filters. Similar comparison has been performed on the same filters combined with image binary thresholding procedures. At last, the numerical evaluation is compared to visual filters evaluation based on the results of NMR brain image enhancement reached by using different filtering methods.

The problem of quality control of membranes destined for medical applications is presented. The shape of the membranes surface, its structure, porosity and coarseness are of importance in contact with live cells or simply with live tissue, and as such they should be controlled. For this purpose, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in our work was used. Results of capillary polysulphone (PSF) 70000 m.m. and polyetherosulphone (PES) 42000 m.m. membranes examination are described. An attempt to apply the computer-aided SEM images processing methods to the membranes' porosity evaluation was made and is presented in the paper. In particular, an approach to segmentation of contours of micropores in the visualized membranes' sections and to evaluation of their morphological parameters is described. An attempt to an approximate statistical reconstruction of 3-dimensional structure of micropores on the basis of collections of 2-dimensional membranes' sections is also described.

Celem niniejszej pracy było zastosowanie wybranych technik obróbki obrazów i ocena ich wpływu na analizę zdjęć rentgenowskich. Przedmiotem analizy były stawy między-paliczkowe bliższe palców II, III, IV obu rąk osób zdrowych i chorujących na reumatoidalne zapalenie stawów. Porównywano wyniki pomiarów szpar stawowych uzyskane przed i po filtracji komputerowej. Do obróbki wybrano trzy filtry oferowane przez program Optimas: Horizontal, Mediana i Sharpen Hi. Zwrócono uwagę, że na dokładność pomiaru szerokości szpary stawowej wpływa sposób obróbki obrazu. Udowodniono również, że u osób chorych szpary stawowe są węższe niż u osób zdrowych.

The goal of the research was the evaluation of image processing methods applied for analysis of radiographic pictures. The proximal interphalangeal joints of II, III and IV finger of healthy subjects and patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis were examined. The width of joint gap was measured. The image transforms offered by Optimas image processing program: Horizontal, Mediana i Sharpen Hi, were tested. The accuracy of the measurement is influenced by the applied image processing method. It was stated that healthy individuals have wider joint gaps than the ill persons.

Zbadano wpływ niskich temperatur stosowanych zarówno podczas krioterapii lokalnej, jak i ogólnoustrojowej u osób zdrowych i pacjentów z reumatoidalnym zapaleniem stawów. Oceniano rozkład temperatury na powierzchni ciała w okolicy kolan. Zastosowano komputerową akwizycję i obróbkę obrazów termowizyjnych do badania zmian temperaturowych w czasie. Zaobserwowano wyższe gradienty zmian temperaturowych u osób zdrowych, niż u osób chorych.

The influence of low temperatures applied during the local, as well as whole body cryotherapy of healthy persons and patients with rheumatoid disease was studied. The temperature distribution on the body surface was evaluated in the knee areas. Computer aided acquisition and image processing of thermal images was used for examination of temperature changes in time. The highest temperature gradient was observed in case of healthy persons.

A series of methods has been developed to promote medical image analysis and interpretation in complex diagnostic task. Image processing methods wher used for better representation of informative features for the expert's analysis. Then the expert's descriptions of processed image where colected in the database to find discriminative features and create classification decision rules. Created threshold rules were interpreted by physicans as a syndrome- like construction conventional for medicine. We proposed some statistics that were helpful for measuring some discrimenative features directly in the image ro realze unbiased expert-independed part of image descriptions. Developed methods were applied for early peripheral lung cancer diagnosis and helped to improve the efficacyb of image interpretation for phisicians of different qualifications.
