Within the Special Research Program for Disassembly Factories conducted at the TU Berlin, a variety of methods are being developed to perform the disassembly process inside the environment of a disassembly factory. One of the projects carried out, deals with the support of the adaptation process by the application of electronic microsystems. Hereby procedures are being developed that actively provide product and process information for the adaptation of a product. An adaptation process consists of the sub-processes disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, treatment, component supply and removal, testing and sorting. The concept of the life cycle unit (LCU) is being considered an active procedure for providing the adaptation process with necessary data for an eased adaptation. This publication presents briefly the concept and shows the possibilities of the LCU to support the quality assurance and product liability of products, The LCU includes four modules: sensor, marking, the life cycle board (LCB) and actuator. Depending on their field of application all four elements can either be joined or used partially combined.
