Zacisze Community Center aka “Chimney of Culture” in Targówek Fabryczny in Warsaw

The Community Center is the most common institution promoting culture, and at the same time an important facility in the public space of cities in Poland. A large district of Warsaw - Targówek - faced the problem of the lack of an appropriate-sized community center. The existing building of the community center in Zacisze, even after the expansion in line with the 2018 architectural competition program, will not meet the expectations of the residents of this district of Warsaw. As a solution, the author of the article proposes the construction of a new facility, located in the vicinity of the existing historic factory chimney at Radzymińska Street. In order to stimulate the discussion and find the right spatial, functional and aesthetic solutions, the author introduced this topic under the name "Chimney of Culture" during the design classes conducted in the 7th semester at the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology. Student projects show that this magnificent, tall chimney, like in many other Polish and European projects, can become the dominant feature of the district, an identifier of its center. Such an object, spatially connected with Radzymińska Street, could be the center of the social and cultural life of the entire Targówek district, and an important element in the structure of Warsaw.

Celem autorki jest refleksja nad zagadnieniem metod kreacji społecznej aktywności poprzez akcje kulturowe w celu osiągnięcia zrównoważo-nego rozwoju społecznego. Oparciem dla rozważań jest schemat społecznej aktywności: pytanie – wyzwanie – czynna odpowiedź – zmiana. W tekście przypomniano wybrane opinie naukowe (J. Kozielecki, J. Nikitorowicz, I. Krzemiński, P. Sztompka, E. Abramowski) oraz dokonano przedstawienia obrazu praktycznej realizacji procesu aktywizacji społecznej na przykładzie Miejskiego Domu Kultury „Koszutka” oraz Akademii Aktywnego Seniora w Katowicach. Do tez obecnego wywodu należy konkluzja o ważnej funkcji, jaką w procesie kształtowania zrównoważonego rozwoju obywatelskiego pełni dobrze zorganizowana edukacja kulturalna na poziomie lokalnym. Celem tekstu, obok ukazania bardzo dobrze prowadzonej placówki kulturalnej, jest podkreślenie wagi wychowania obywatelskiego poprzez czynne uczestnictwo w kulturze, szczególnie w starszym wieku.

The main point of this article is to present the process of cultural education and stimulation of social activity of contemporary civil society. These actions are to create the state of the social sustainable development. All reflections are constructed on the grounds of the schema: question – challenge – active response – change. The author explore some of the scientific opinions (J. Kozielecki, I. Krzemiński, P. Sztompka, E. Abramowski) and take as for examples the Academy of the Active Senior and the Community Center „Koszutka” in Katowice. The two targets of this article are to describe this cultural center and to underline the importance of the cultural education in the process of creating the social sustainable development.
