Content available remote From cochlear implants to Brain-Computer Interfaces
EN
In this article two groups of technologies based on connecting a medical device to the human brain are presented. The first group exploits the existing nerves, like the cochlear implant where ear prosthesis is connected to the auditory nerve. Another group is based on a direct connection between an electronic device and the human brain and it is called Brain-Computer Interfaces. The article contains the description of these technologies, points out their current capabilities and limitations and the main barriers to further development. The authors indicate possible directions of future expansion of the discussed technologies.

Content available remote New methods of deafness and partial deafness treatment
EN
Implantable hearing prostheses are a preferred medium for (re)habilitation in individuaIs with sensorineural deafness and profound hearing loss. Cochlear implants are used in hearing impairments of the cochlear origin, while in cases of the retrocochlear origin, auditory brainstem implants are applied. The obtained results indicate that open-set speech understanding has now become achievable for the majority of cohlear and brainstem implant users. Moreover, the new method of partial deafness treatment has been offered for patients remaining beyond the scope of effective treatment with application of cochlear implant or hearing aids.

Opisano w jaki sposób ucho przetwarza sygnały akustyczne. Omówiono charakterystyczne właściwości elektronicznych protez uszu z implantami w uchu wewnętrznym. Dokonano przeglądu współczesnych metod przetwarzania sygnałów mowy w protezach ucha. Podano przykłady aktualnie stosowanych protez ślimakowych.

How the human ear process the acoustic signals is described. The characteristics of the electronic prosthesis of ears with cochlear implants are listed. The survey of contemporary methods of acoustic signal processing into electric stimulation pulses is presented. This survey is illustrated with few examples of today's cochlear prosthesis.
