Speech Recognition in an Enclosure with a Long Reverberation Time

The aim of this work was to measure subjective speech intelligibility in an enclosure with a long reverberation time and comparison of these results with objective parameters. Impulse Responses (IRs) were first determined with a dummy head in different measurement points of the enclosure. The following objective parameters were calculated with Dirac 4.1 software: Reverberation Time (RT), Early Decay Time (EDT), weighted Clarity (C50) and Speech Transmission Index (STI). For the chosen measurement points, a convolution of the IRs with the Polish Sentence Test (PST) and logatome tests was made. PST was presented at a background of a babble noise and speech reception threshold – SRT (i.e. SNR yielding 50% speech intelligibility) for those points were evaluated. A relationship of the sentence and logatome recognition vs. STI was determined. It was found that the final SRT data are well correlated with speech transmission index (STI), and can be expressed by a psychometric function. The difference between SRT determined in condition without reverberation and in reverberation conditions appeared to be a good measure of the effect of reverberation on speech intelligibility in a room. In addition, speech intelligibility, with and without use of the sound amplification system installed in the enclosure, was compared.

Będzie tu o przejrzystości, która jest pojęciem uznawanym powszechnie, także w architekturze, jako pozytywne, bezdyskusyjnie. Autor jest przeciwnego zdania i uważa, iż traktując takie rozumowanie jako zasadę, zjawisko nudy, a i potrzeba niespodzianki i zaskoczenia często przemawia za koniecznością odchodzenia od niej. Można więc, i trzeba, polemizować z pozornym traktowaniem pojęć, co autor próbuje czynić, argumentując, opierając się na innych terminach czy konstrukcjach językowych. Dotyczy to architektury od urbanistyki aż po układy mieszkań czy budynków szkolnych, wreszcie – każdegoprzeznaczenia obiektów architektonicznych.

The common interpretation of the term clarity is perceived in our language as always positive. Is it really right? In this paper the author tries to discuss a question and he suggests such thinking cannot be a norm in architeture. Both, in town-planning and in housing or in schools, a.s.o. the legibility is not always needed. We often need exception to the rule.

Wille realizują poniekąd założenia głoszone jeszcze przez Witruwiusza. Cechuje je: trwałość, użyteczność oraz estetyka. Tym samym odpowiadają nam na pytania: Czy dziś teorie architektury są potrzebne? Jakie są najpilniejsze potrzeby coraz bardziej świadomych użytkowników współczesnych realizacji?

The presentation is focused on a modern residential complex of Water Villas in Almere as an illustration of architecture strongly integrated with the landscape, created as a result of participation of the community. The principles underlying the idea of the villas can be traced as far back as Vitruvius. Their characteristics are durability, usefulness and aesthetics. In this aspect they answer the questions: Do we need theories of architecture today? What are the most urgent needs of the users, more and more conscious, of current architectural projects?
