Purpose: Development of a semi-continuous caster that can cast a single plate and a clad plate of Al-40%Sn-1%Cu alloy used for sliding bearings. Design/methodology/approach: A semi-continuous caster to cast a single plate and a clad plate directly from molten metal was designed and assembled. The cast single plate has a thickness ranging from 10 mm to 30 mm, a width of 400 mm, and a length of 500 mm to 1,000 mm. The cast clad plate has a thickness ranging from 10 mm to 30 mm, a width of 50 mm, and a length of 300 mm. Findings: The semi-continuous caster successfully produced both a single plate and a clad plate of Al-40%Sn-1%Cu alloy. Influence of casting conditions on the properties of the plate, including the thickness, porosity, and surface quality were investigated in the single plate casting. The mixing and diffusion of the alloy elements at the interface was also investigated in the clad plate casting. Research limitations/implications: The cast Al-40%Sn-1%Cu alloy plate has not yet been tested as a sliding bearing material, so the efficacy of the material still requires investigation. Practical implications: The semi-continuous caster described in this paper enables the “small lot” production made from single and clad plates of aluminium alloy. Originality/value: Development of a semi-continuous caster that can cast both single and clad plates of aluminium alloy. Investigation of the relationship between the casting conditions and plate quality.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań wpływu wodoru na adhezję plateru do podłoża w złączach wytworzonych metodą walcowania na gorąco. Badano próbki blachy stalowej C20Y (podłoże) platerowanej odporną na korozję stalą ferrytyczną X20Cr13 lub stalą X6Cr13 (z przekładką niklową). Wykonano próby ścinania oraz badania fraktograficzne powierzchni przełomów stosując technikę elektronowej mikroskopii skaningowej (SEM). Wykazano, że w badanych złączach, wodór powoduje spadek wytrzymałości na ścinanie (osłabienie adhezji) połączenia między stalą niestopową a platerem wykonanym z odpornej na korozję stali ferrytycznej, podobnie jak w przypadku złączy wytwarzanych metodą wybuchową.

In this work the results of the influence of hydrogen on adhesion of plated coating in joints zone produced by hot rolling are presented. The samples of carbon steel C20Y (base) plated ferritic stainless steel X20Cr13 or X6Cr13 (with nickel interlayer) were investigated. Specimens were destructively tested in bond shear test. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used for a through examination of the shear fracture surface. It was shown that hydrogen causes a decrease in shear strength (weakness of adhesion) of the interface between the carbon steel (base plate) and ferritic stainless steels bonded by hot rolling, similarly as in the joints produced by explosive cladding method.

Evaluation of steel clad plate weldability using ram tensile test method

The weldability evaluation of steel clad plate is performed using the ram tensile test method. Numerical analysis of the considered problem is performed using the finite element method. The author introduces and verifies a critical ram tension strength R0 above the yield strength RIIe – as the criterion of the weldability evaluation of clad steel plate, where: RIIe =RIe < 0:707, RIIe, RIe – yield strengths of soft and hard materials.

Jedną z metod otrzymywania materiałów warstwowych jest ich łączenie przez wybuch. Na przykładzie plateru Al-Cu pokazano możliwości obróbki plastycznej na zimno przez walcowanie, spęczanie, gięcie i tłoczenie takich materiałów.

One of the method to obtain laminated materials is the bonding of metal explosion. On the example bi-metal Al-Cu it has been shown the plastic cold working; for example rolling, upsetting, press forming.
