Disease, their causal agents and occurrence on turfgrasses were studied in 1990-2000. The influence of diseases on lawn characters in different systems of maintenance was evaluated. Studies concemed the most important species used for lawn in Poland, such as Lolium perenne, Poa pratensis and Festuca rubra. Some experiments were performed additionally on other species as Festuca ovina, Festuca arundinacea and Deschampsia caespitosa. The materiał for study were cultivars and stains in the trials conducted under different system of maintenance: extensive (Eco), moderate extensive (Park-shade), moderate intensive (Relax) and intensive (Sport). The investigations revealed that the occurrence of turfgrass diseases did not differ markedly from that noted in other countries of temperate climate. It was confirmed that diseases decidedly influenced the aesthetic value of the lawn. They limit the values of such characters as generał performance, compactness and ąuality index. The occurrence of diseases and their harmfulness in a great extent depend on the intensity of maintenance (nutrition, cutting), environment conditions (shade, high moisture) and susceptibility of species and cultivars used to the mixture. The most harmful diseases were: snow mould (Microdochium nivale) in Lolium perenne, Festuca rubra, Festuca arundinacea and Festuca ovina; leaf spot and melting out (Drechslera poae) in Poa pratensis', powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis) in Poa pratensis under shadow environment; pink patch (Limonomyces roseipellis) and red thread (Laetisaria fuciformis) in Lolium perenne and Festuca rubra, brown patch (Rhizoctonia solani) in all grass species in tire first year of maintenance; rust (Puccinia striiformis) in Poa pratensis and (Puccinia graminis) in Deschampsia caespitosa', blister smut (Entyloma dactylidis) in Poa pratensis and in Festuca rubra ssp. rubra and fairy rings (Basidiomycets spp.) in all tested grass species.
