The application of chemometric methods and strategies for sediment pollution is presented. Since the sediments are an important environmental phase collecting the history of polluting events, the correct data analysis, modeling and interpretation of monitoring results from lake, marine and river sediments is performed. Variety of chemometric techniques like cluster analysis, principal components analysis, fuzzy principal components analysis, self-organizing maps of Kohonen, end-point mixing models are used in order to detect sources of pollution in a certain environment, linkage between sampling sites and chemical parameters, relationships between ecotoxicity values with chemical pollutants etc.

Przedstawiono zastosowanie strategii i metod chemometrycznych do oceny zanieczyszczenia osadów dennych. Osady te są ważnym elementem środowiska, gromadzącym informacje o przeszłych wydarzeniach polegających na wprowadzaniu zanieczyszczeń do środowiska. Wykonano odpowiednią analizę danych, modelowano oraz zinterpretowano wyniki badań monitoringowych osadów jeziornych, rzecznych i morskich. W celu wykrycia źródeł zanieczyszczeń w określonym środowisku, powiązania miejsc pobierania próbek oraz parametrów chemicznych, zależności ekotoksyczności od rodzaju zanieczyszczenia i in. zastosowano różnorodne techniki chemometryczne, takie jak: analiza skupień, analiza głównych składowych, analiza rozmytych głównych składowych, samoorganizujące się mapy Kohonena oraz modele mieszania punktu końcowego.

The results of the application of chemometric methods, such as principal component analysis (PCA) and its generalization for N-way data, the Tucker3 model, for the analysis of an environmental data set are presented. The analyzed data consists of concentration values of chemical compounds of organic matter, and their transformed products, in a short-term study of a sea water column measured at the Gdańsk Deep (.[fi]= 55°1’N, [lambda] = 19°10’E). The main goal of this paper is to present improved approaches for exploration of data sets with missing elements, based on the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. The most common methods for dealing with missing data, generally consisting of setting the missing elements to zero or to mean values of the measured data, are often unacceptable as they destroy data correlations or influence interpretation of relationships between objects and variables. The EM algorithm may be built into different computational procedures used for exploratory analysis (i.e. EM/PCA or EM/TUCKER3).

Scharakteryzowano techniki chemometryczne wykorzystywane w biomonitoringu, także w lichenomonitoringu środowiska. Techniki te wykorzystywane są przede wszystkim w celu interpretacji danych uzy-skanych z układów złożonych, charakteryzujących się wielowymiarowością oddziaływań. Ich zakres obejmuje szereg czynności - od planowania eksperymentu po opracowanie i interpretację danych ekspe-rymentalnych. Przedstawiono przykłady zastosowania tych technik w celu interpretacji wzajemnych relacji między stężeniem pierwiastków śladowych skumulowanych w porostach a ich stężeniem w otoczeniu.

Chemometric methods used in biomonitoring, especially in lichenomonitoring of environment were characterized. These methods are first of all used for the interpretation of data obtained from complex systems, characterized by multidimensionality of influences. Their range embraces a number of activities, starting from experiment planning and finishing on elaboration and experimental data interpretation. Examples of use of these methods for interpretation of mutual relationships between the concentration of accumulated trace elements in lichen and their concentration in the environment were described.
