Image data paradox – on the impact of the development of image-based remote sensing on the maps’ content in the Eastern Bloc. The case of Poland

The authors examine the impact of the development of image-based remote sensing systems on the activities of state administrations in the cartographic production and making of geographical information publicly available in the Eastern Bloc countries. A convergence of cartography, secrecy, and power occurred during the Cold War. Through investigation of facts relevant to the acquisition image data of the Earth surface performed by the USA and the USSR, it aims to examine the key questions of why the logic behind the development of cartography in the Eastern Bloc countries after World War II was distorted. The lack of logic was reflected in the fact that the amount of information actually presented on maps decreased with an increase in the information about the surface of the Earth acquired by the means of remote sensing systems. It was suggested that image data in the member states of the Eastern Bloc, in spite of their restricted use and a drop in the informational value of maps, was the main factor behind the creation, detail, and geometric accuracy of civilian maps. Proving this thesis involved analyzing the correlations between the achievements in the field of remote sensing and the quality of maps developed during the Cold War in the Eastern Bloc states.

The article outlines the history of the publishing house Przedświt, operating illegally outside the scope of censorship (in the so-called second circulation) in the years 1982–1989. The publishing house oriented at the publishing of valuable books – not only those that could not appear legally – was a peculiar phenomenon on the map of underground printing and publishing. A special distinction of Przedświt were also artistic covers, designed by well-known graphic artists. The article covers both issues related to activities of underground publishing houses or repression by the authorities of Popular Republic of Poland, as well as short biographical entries of employees and associates, and a list of books published by the publishing house with a short summary of each. The content of the article for the most part is based on spoken sources – memories of people involved in publishing.

W poprzednim wspomnieniowym artykule (1), napisanym w związku z wkroczeniem w 70. rok wydawania „Przeglądu Papierniczego” (2), obiecałem przedstawienie, jak na jego łamach przebiegała odbudowa i uruchamianie po II wojnie światowej kolejnych zakładów naszej branży, a zwłaszcza poniemieckich na tzw. Ziemiach Odzyskanych, oraz organizowanie od podstaw zrębów szkolnictwa zawodowego na ich potrzeby. Tymczasem tragiczne skutki podziału Europy na dwa odrębne, wrogie sobie bloki przerosły moje wyobrażenie o tamtych czasach, w których spędziłem dość pogodne dzieciństwo, więc komunistyczny terror i jego tragiczne skutki nie tylko zdominowały ten pierwszy artykuł, ale tuż po jego oddaniu do druku wpadły mi w ręce nowe źródłowe materiały na ten smutny temat, których nie mogę nie przytoczyć, zanim skupimy się na autentycznym entuzjaźmie i zaangażowaniu papierników w odbudowę przemysłu i kraju.

Pierwszy numer naszego jedynego dotąd papierniczego czasopisma naukowo-technicznego wyszedł 1 sierpnia 1945 r. (patrz PP nr 1/2014, s. 3), a więc zdumiewająco szybko po zakończeniu II wojny światowej. „Przegląd Papierniczy” jest zatem świadkiem całej powojennej historii Polski i wszystkich zachodzących w niej przemian, także dramatycznych i tragicznych, przez pryzmat branży papierniczej.
