Contamination of Environment with the Heavy Metals Emitted from a Cement Factory, Kosovo

The environment and its components have been severely contaminated over the years due to massive pollution. The multiple use of heavy metals in industrial, domestic, agricultural, medical and technological applications have led to their wide distribution in the environment. Different studies implied that the primary contribution to the ecological risk index, originated from various anthropogenic influences such as industrialization and urbanization. This has compromised the ability of the environment to foster life and render its intrinsic values due to the heavy usage of these elements. This research illustrates the assessment of heavy metals in waste, water, sludge and soil. Monitoring was performed in vicinity of a cement factory on the southern Kosovo, where the sampling and measurements were performed in the autumn season of 2018. With the use of atomic absorption spectroscopy technique (AAS), the elements determined in this study were Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, Fe, Mn, and Al. The findings of this study revealed a little change in the concentrations of these elements in the environment samples, especially in water, apart from that there is slight pollution of the environment with heavy metals in this zone.

W artykule omówiono historię jednej z największych i swego czasu najnowocześniejszej w Polsce cementowni. Szczakowa powstała pod koniec XIX wieku i przez ponad sto lat wytwarzała wysokiej klasy cement znany na całym świecie. Dawała ludziom pracę, utworzyła osiedle i szkoliła kolejne pokolenia rzemieślników. Niestety w skutek złego zarządzania i nadmiernej eksploatacji maszyn została zamknięta. Mimo braku produkcji teren fabryki żył „własnym życiem”, które zostało przerwane w momencie zniszczenia, a w konsekwencji rozbiórki wartościowych postindustrialnych obiektów.

The article discusses the history of one of the largest and the most modern of its time cement works in Poland. Szczakowa was founded at the end of the nineteenth century and for over a hundred years was producing high-quality cement famous throughout the world. It was giving people jobs, created housing estate and trained successive generations of craftsmen. Unfortunately, due to bad management and excessive use of machines, it has been closed. Despite the lack of production, the factory’s area was living its own life which was interrupted at the moment of destruction, and consequently the demolition of valuable post-industrial objects.

Cementownie od dawna wykorzystują energię powstałą w wyniku współspalania odpadów. Rozwiązanie problemu składowania i ponownego wykorzystania „śmieci” wydaje się coraz bardziej realne, również za sprawą sektora energetycznego. Ale czy elektrownie i elektrociepłownie są już przygotowane na przyjmowanie paliw alternatywnych? Czy istnieją odpowiednie przepisy? Jakie wynikają z tego problemy, a jakie korzyści? W jakim kierunku zmierza produkcja i odbiór paliw alternatywnych? Konferencja „Paliwa z odpadów – rynek odpadów jako rynek energii”, zorganizowana w Chorzowie na przełomie maja i czerwca br. przez spółkę Abrys, przyniosła odpowiedzi na nurtujące branżę pytania. Przedsiębiorstwa inwestujące w nowe technologie, produkujące paliwa oraz ich odbiorcy muszą znać jasno określone reguły, aby mogły spokojnie i skutecznie się rozwijać.
