We investigated the effects of chemical treatment (18 wt.% aqueous solution of NaOH), γ60Co radiation and the action of enzymes on the molecular structure and solubility of cellulose in NaOH solution. By using gel permeation chromatography (GPC), it was found out that the molecular heterogeneity of cellulose samples treated with NaOH significantly decreases, and that higher fractions of the polymer are more susceptible to alkaline degradation than are short cellulose macromolecules. Degradation caused by γ-radiation seems to be a fully statistical process. The effect of enzymatic treatment on the molecular parameters of cellulose is quite different. High fractions of the polymer disappear more slowly, and only a slight decrease in the polydispersity ratio can be noticed. At the same time, however, enzymatically treated cellulose becomes readily soluble in a NaOH aqueous solution. This can be useful in the new technology of cellulose fibre manufacturing.
