This paper describes physiological phenomena of a electrical stimulation of nerve cell and presents technical issues of electroconvulsive therapy used by psychiatrists.
Electrical properties and structure of biological tissue determine the manner of current conduction through them. Numerical simulation of a cell suspension is performed demonstrating the effect of frequency-dependent effective specific conductivity and permittivity. For AC current conduction, magnetic induction effects can be neglected in a wide frequency range. Displacement current is in general smaller than conductive, however, for proper analysis it cannot be completely neglected.
