Activity-Based Detection of (Anti-)Patterns: An Embedded Case Study of the Fire Drill

Background: Nowadays, expensive, error-prone, expert-based evaluations are needed to identify and assess software process anti-patterns. Process artifacts cannot be automatically used to quantitatively analyze and train prediction models without exact ground truth. Aim: Develop a replicable methodology for organizational learning from process (anti-)patterns, demonstrating the mining of reliable ground truth and exploitation of process artifacts. Method: We conduct an embedded case study to find manifestations of the Fire Drill anti-pattern in n=15 projects. To ensure quality, three human experts agree. Their evaluation and the process’ artifacts are utilized to establish a quantitative understanding and train a prediction model. Results: Qualitative review shows many project issues. (i) Expert assessments consistently provide credible ground truth. (ii) Fire Drill phenomenological descriptions match project activity time (for example, development). (iii) Regression models trained on approx. 12–25 examples are sufficiently stable. Conclusion: The approach is data source-independent (source code or issue-tracking). It allows leveraging process artifacts for establishing additional phenomenon knowledge and training robust predictive models. The results indicate the aptness of the methodology for the identification of the Fire Drill and similar anti-pattern instances modeled using activities. Such identification could be used in post mortem process analysis supporting organizational learning for improving processes.

Wykorzystanie metody SMED do ograniczenia czasu przezbrojenia maszyny etykietującej

Artykuł to studium przypadku z wykorzystania metody SMED do redukcji czasu przezbrojenia maszyny etykietującej wykorzystywanej do etykietowania butelek w jednej z firm produkujących naturalną wodę źródlaną i napoje gazowane. W artykule przedstawiono kolejne etapy związane z wdrażaniem metody SMED w badanym przedsiębiorstwie w odniesieniu do badanej maszyny, od wyboru obszaru pilotażowego i powołania zespołu badawczego do analizy korzyści wynikających z wdrożenia metody SMED w badanym obszarze. Eliminacja czynności zbędnych oraz przeprowadzenie zmiany czynności zewnętrznych na czynności wewnętrzne pozwoliło zmniejszyć czas trwania procesu przezbrojenia i dzięki temu uzyskać wyraźne oszczędności czasu. Wdrożenie metody SMED w badanym przedsiębiorstwie i na badanej maszynie pozwoliło osiągnąć wymierne korzyści w postaci m.in. skrócenia cyklu produkcyjnego, obniżenia kosztów produkcji, większej elastyczności produkcji, lepszej jakości i poprawy komfortu pracy.

The article is a case study of the use of the SMED method to reduce the changeover time of the labelling machine used for labelling bottles in one of the companies producing natural spring water and carbonated drinks. The article presents the subsequent stages related to the implementation of the SMED method in the studied company in relation to the analysed machine, from the selection of a pilot area and appointment of a research team to the analysis of the benefits of implementing the SMED method in the studied area. The elimination of unnecessary activities and the conversion of external activities to internal activities allowed reducing the time of the changeover process and thus achieving significant time savings. The implementation of the SMED method in the tested company and the tested machine allowed to achieve tangible benefits in the form of, among others shortening the production cycle, lowering production costs, greater production flexibility, better quality and improving the comfort of work.

W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono proces oceny pracowników instytucji szkolnictwa wyższego (Wyższa Szkoła Biznesu w Dąbrowie Górniczej) pokazany i zanalizowany jako typowy proces biznesowy. Celem pracy jest przedstawienie studium przypadku modelowania procesów biznesowych dla konkretnej organizacji jako środka do poprawy zrozumienia procesu. Omówiono skuteczność samego procesu modelowania jako metody przeglądu opisu procesu. Do analizy wykorzystano część metodologii oceny bezpieczeństwa, zaproponowaną w poprzednich pracach wraz z Instytutem EMAG w Katowicach. Studium przypadku jest w pełni przedstawione i opisane; pokazane modelowanie procesu za pomocą diagramu EPC pozwoliło na przeprowadzenie analizy o większym stopniu skuteczności niż wywiady z doświadczonymi pracownikami, będącymi właścicielami procesu.

In this paper, the assessment process of the staff of higher education institution (Academy of Business in Dabrowa Gornicza) as a business process is shown. The aim of the paper is to present case-study of business process modeling for a specific organization as a means for improvement of the process understanding. The effectiveness of the modeling process itself as a review of the process description is discussed. For the analysis, we use a part of security assessment methodology, proposed in previous works with EMAG Institute in Katowice, Poland. The case study is presented and described. The model shown led to more complete and effective analysis than the interviews with experienced employees and process owners.
