The extreme material effort of a cylinder subjected to internal and external pressure loads is studied for the Huber-Mises-Hencky yield criterion. The relation between the pressure loads on inner and outer shell walls of a cylinder is concerned. A cylinder with both ends open, and a compound cylinder with both ends closed are considered. For the case with both ends open the hoop and radial stress are considered. Additionally, for the cylinder with closed ends the axial stresses which balances the fluid pressure on the bottom walls is taken into account. The possibility of using the extreme load carrying capacity to design improved high pressure compound tanks has been discussed.
