The performance of zirconia-based electrochemical sensor for CO2 monitoring is described. The basic components of the sensor include yttria-doped cubic zirconia as a solid electrolyte and a mixture of carbonates as a CO(2) sensing material. In the range of 12-18 ppm of CO(2) the sensor's response time at 773 K is about 90 s. The sensor exhibits stable performance characteristics within 3-4 months. It is shown that sensor performance is determined by the formation of an ionic bridge that is formed during a special activation procedure.
