In this paper, two scenic caves, five selected karst rock forms, and five rock outcrops situated in the Ojców National Park and its protected zone area are the subject of comparative research, considered as very essential examples of geotouristic potential. Most of their karst forms differ between each other. These include Łokietek and Ciemna (Dark) cave, Kraków Gate, Rękawica and Igła Deotymy rock-cliff at Ojców, Duży Pochylec rock-cliff in Skała, and Maczuga Herkulesa rocky tower at Pieskowa Skała. Apart from them, outcrops of Quaternary calcareous tufa and rock falls at Ojców, an abrasion surface cutting Upper Jurassic limestones and covered with Cretaceous limestones and marls, Pleistocene loess at Januszowice, and the Duże Skałki (Big Rocks) former quarry of Upper Jurassic limestone at Czajowice were also studied. All of them are situated in the Silesian-Kraków Monocline. The caves, rock-cliffs and Maczuga Herkulesa rocky tower developed in the Upper Jurassic Oxfordian massive limestone. Their karst forms are diverse and picturesque. The other objects selected for research are also very interesting and important examples, displaying products of very complex geological processes. The comparative geotouristic potential evaluation of all 12 objects was made to meet tourists', educators' and investors' expectations and needs to increase their geotouristic development level. The statistical data of the annual number of visitors at the described two caves is also discussed. In general, interest in them as geotouristic abiotic nature objects has been growing regularly until today. They have become very widely known in Poland. Moreover, the Łokietek Cave, Kraków Gate rock-cliff and Maczuga Herkulesa rocky tower have become very popular worldwide.

The aim of the paper is to examine the variability of physical and chemical characteristics of two springs located in the Zagórzański Stream catchment (Spisko-Gubałowskie Foothills, Podhale region). Calcareous tufa occurs at one of the investigated springs. Field studies were conducted once a month from 25th March 2017 to 28thFebruary 2018. Water of the studied springs represents the bicarbonate-calcium-magnesium type during almost the whole year. The chemical composition of both springs is characterized by seasonal variability. The highest concentrations of most ions occurred in the summer, when the rainfall was the lowest and during winter drought; while the lowest concentration - in the period of increased rainfall. The variability of physical and chemical parameters of the spring with tufa is smaller than the other one. The spring with calcareous tufa stands out by the higher concentration of Mg2+ and SO42- and the presence of radon. The unique landscape values of the surroundings and hydrogeochemical features of the spring with calcareous tufa favour this place as an interesting hydro-tourism attraction in the Bukowina Tatrzańska region.

Liczne skorupki mięczaków znaleziono w odsłonięciu martwic wapiennych we wsi Rybna k. Krakowa. W 12 próbkach rozpoznano występowanie ponad 2500 okazów należących do 49 gatunków. W obrębie sekwencji malakologicznej możliwe było wydzielenie trzech zespołów faunistycznych. Najstarszy z nich (fauna M) odpowiada chłodnemu okresowi wczesnego holocenu i reprezentuje zacienione siedliska o dużej wilgotności, porośnięte krzewami lub rzadkimi lasami o znacznym udziale drzew iglastych. Charakteryzuje on siedliska zwartych lasów mieszanych i liściastych. Pojawiają się tu liczne formy o wysokich wymaganiach termicznych. Najmłodszy zespół (fauna O) wskazuje na rozległe antropogeniczne wylesienia na obszarze depozycji martwic wapiennych. Ta zmiana cech siedlisk przyrodniczych była prawdopodobnie związana z fazą intensywnego zasiedlenia okolic wsi Rybna i rozwoju rolnictwa we wczesnym średniowieczu.

Numerous molluscan shells were found in an outcrop of calcareous tufa in the village of Rybna near Kraków. In 12 samples, over 2500 specimens belonging to 49 taxons were found. Three types of molluscan assemblages can be distinguished within the malacological sequences. The oldest of them (M-type fauna) corresponds to the cold period of the Early Holocene and represents shady habitats of significant moisture, covered with bushes or sparse coniferous forests. Its characteristic feature is the presence of cold-tolerant species typical for cold climate phases. The second, younger assemblage (F-type fauna) is typical for the warm and moist climate of the Atlantic Phase. It characterizes habitats of dense mixed and deciduous forests. Numerous forms of high thermal requirements are found here. The youngest assemblage (O-type fauna) implies extensive anthropogenic deforestations in the surrounding area. This change in the characteristics of natural environment was most likely associated with a phase of intense settlement in the village of Rybna and development of agriculture during the Middle Ages.

This malacological analysis was conducted at a site with peat and calcareous tufas in Łapsze Niżne, Podhale (southern Poland). The study was carried out in 6 main and several complementary sections, in which 37 mollusc species were recognized represented by almost 11 000 specimens. The study enabled the reconstruction of environmental changes during the accumulation of the Holocene deposits (from the Boreal Phase till present). Conclusions drawn from these reconstructions were compared with results of malacological and palynological studies from other sites in Podhale. As a result, regional environmental reconstructions for the Holocene of the area were made. The specific composition, ecological structure and succession of molluscan assemblages from Łapsze Niżne indicate a significant role for local factors, thus demonstrating the variability of environmental conditions within a geographic region.

A rich molluscan fauna was found in the outcrop of slope sediments and calcareous tufas in the valley of the Ociemny Stream in the Pieniny Mts. The malacological sequence identified there represents the entire Holocene, but it contains several stratigraphical gaps. From this viewpoint, it is a unique finding within the area studied. In nine samples, 11,000 specimens of 71 species of molluscs were identified. The ecological and zoogeographical diversity of the composition and structure enabled the separation of three faunistic assemblages. The oldest assemblage (with Discus ruderatus) corresponds with the cold period of the Early Holocene and represents shadowed habitats overgrown with the coniferous forests of the taiga type. Its characteristic feature is the presence of glacial relics (e.g. Vertigo genesii and Vertigo geyeri). The other younger fauna (with Discus perspectivus) is typical of the humid and warm climate of the Atlantic Phase. It is characteristic of the habitats of mixed and deciduous forests. Numerous Balkan and Mediterranean thermophilous forms appear in this assemblage. The youngest malacoenosis (with Bithynella austriaca) is typical for the historical times. The particular intervals containing molluscan fauna are separated by gaps corresponding to the erosion phases. Because of the land relief in the valley of the Ociemny Stream, which is not conducive to the development of human economy, no marked anthropogenic deforestation occurs.

Spring-fed fens in Wardzyń represent the rare group of alkaline mires supplied by artesian groundwater. Using multidisciplinary methods (including sedimentological, hydrometric and hydrochemical, pollen, macrofossil, malacological, geochemical, radiocarbon dating, and stable oxygen and carbon isotope analyses) we have been able to (1) reconstruct the main phases of spring-fed fen development, and to (2) determine the cause of Neoholocene groundwater ascension responsible for the mire inception. These phases are characterized by cyclic organic (peat) and carbonate (tufa) sedimentation associated with the Holocene fluctuations in humidity and temperature. The beginning of the activation of hydrological systems (involving the flow of confined groundwater of the Cretaceous aquifer) at Wardzyń occurred in the Subboreal period of the Holocene, after a long episode of decreased humidity initiated ca. 4.2 ka cal BP.

The Białka valley is located in southern Poland. The middle part of the valley is build-up of the Paleogene Podhale Flysch. In common opinion, this region is not particularly attractive in respect to geotourism. To prove that it is not true, I proposed the project of geotourist trail in this area. The trail comprises 5 geosites, where the most attractive objects (according to the author) will be presented. These include calcareous tufa in Jurgow (first geosite), faults in the Bukowińska Grapa (second geosite), where pronounced effects of lateral erosion are evident, which lead to the shifting of the river bed. At this geosite there are also visible joints systems in sandstones (third geosite) and the sandstones show various types of lamination. At the fourth geosite, there occur clear neotectonic features revealed by granite boulders deposited several meters above the contemporary riverbed. Finally, at the fifth geosite, one can examine the thermal pools, which are examples of favorable geological conditions utilized for recreational purposes.

W pracy scharakteryzowano siedlisko przyrodnicze źródliska wapienne ze zbiorowiskami Cratoneurion commutati (kod siedliska Natura 2000: 7220) zlokalizowane w granicach obszaru Natura 2000 Ostoja Gorczańska PLH120018, w górnej części doliny potoku Jamne. Opisano roślinność oraz podstawowe parametry siedliskowe takie jak: wysokość n.p.m., ekspozycja, nachylenie terenu, nasłonecznienie, rodzaj podłoża, sposób przepływu wody oraz wydajność wypływu (szacunkowo). W miejscach gdzie była możliwość poboru wody określono jej temperaturę, pH, przewodność elektrolityczną (PE), zawartość wapnia i magnezu (metodą absorpcyjnej spektrometrii atomowej (ASA)).

The study gives a detail characteristic of a hard water springs habitat with the communities of Cratoneurion commutati (habitat code of Nature 2000: 7220), localized within Nature 2000 protected area Ostoja Gorczańska PLH120018, in an upper part of the valley of Jamne creek. The vegetation is described along with the main habitat parameters, namely: altitude, exposition, slope gradient, insolation, type of bedrock, water flow regime and the spring outflow efficiency. The temperature, pH, electrical conductivity were measured in the field, the concentrations of Ca and Mg in spring water were measured by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). The investigated headwater areas are small (0.7–80 m2) and highly differentiated by the intensity of calcareous tufa precipitation and the degree of plant cover development.

Limestone rock walls of various inclination form a favourable substrate for the deposition of calcareous tufas that form cone-shaped structures located at the foot of slopes or fill niches within them. Such carbonate deposits usually contain rich and diversified molluscan assemblages, whose composition and structure closely correspond to the ambient environmental conditions in the immediate vicinity. The study of the Pieniny Mountains area revealed 10 sites with such deposits. The identified malacofouna was subjected to detailed analysis. It enabled identification of three types of faunistic assemblages (Bythinella austriaca assemblage, Pyramidula pusilla assemblage, and a shade-loving species assemblage), which are related to the conditions prevailing during the deposition. Tufa cones found in the Pieniny Mountains represent the historic period (Late Holocene). The deposits provide a record of two climatic phases: warmer and colder. The former (Medieval Warm Period) involved the intensified deposition of carbonate material and the rapid growth of tufa cones. The latter – the Little Ice Age – entailed the slow degradation of cones and slower sedimentation of tufas, while the intensified physical weathering led to the increase in the clast material proportion (sharp-edged limestone fragments). Tufas accumulated in the zone unaffected by high anthropogenic pressure and thus represent a record of natural environmental changes during the historic period

Badania malakologiczne zostały przeprowadzone w odsłonięciu martwic wapiennych i deluwiów lessowych w Pińczowie na terenie Niecki Nidziańskiej. Zostały opisane bogate i zróżnicowane zespoły mięczaków.

Malacological researches was conducted in an outcrop of calcareous tufa and loess diluvium found in Pińczów, in the Nida Basin. Rich and varied mollusc assemblages were described in detail. The species composition and structure indicates changes in the sedimentary environment during the late Holocene. Calcareous tufa accumulated in a small reservoir formed at the back of travertine dam. The uppermost part of the profile composed of loess diluvium, point out to the development of slope processes induced by human agricultural activity. This sediment accumulated in the Middle Ages as determined from radiocarbon dating and numerous findings of pottery. The succession of the faunal assemblages enables to define the major phases of changes in the sedimentary environment, determine the human impact on the sedimentation and describe the malacofauna diversity. The tufa profile from Pińczów can serve as a model section presenting the carbonate sedimentation process in small lakes and anthropogenic environmental changes.

The paper presents the results of interdisciplinary (multi-proxy) palaeoenvironmental studies of peat – calcareous tufa depositional sequences of spring mire from Radzików site (east Poland). Analyses of three biotic proxies (plant macrofossils, pollen, molluscs) were supplemented with sedi-mentological, geochemical, oxygen and carbon stable isotopes analyses and radiocarbon dating and used for reconstruction of environmental changes in Late Glacial and Holocene. The obtained results enable us to (1) reconstruct main phases of mire development and (2) determine environmental fac-tors influencing changes of water supply. The object started to develop in Allerød. The Late Glacial and Early Holocene deposit sequence is relatively thick (about 1.0 m), with good palaeoecological record. The boundary between Younger Dryas and Preboreal is especially well confirmed by palynological and malacological analyses as well as radiocarbon dating. The Mesoholocene deposits are considerably worse preserved. Mire develop-ment was evaluated in terms of general mire ecology.

Upper Holocene calcareous tufa occur commonly in the Western Beskidy Mts. Often, at least not always they contain more or less rich and differentiated molluscan assemblages. Malacological analysis was carried out on the basis of material collected from 33 localities represented by 59 samples. The most typical communities of snails and bivalves were characterized. Four types and three subtypes of fauna differing oneself in structure and species composition have been distinguished. Malacofauna recognized in discussed calcareous deposits is closely depended on local conditions. The whole material comprises 68 species, but only a few of them occur in large numbers and in many profiles, while the remaining ones had only accesorical importance. Malacological investigations of Upper Holocene calcareous tufa are important for recognizing mechanisms of deposition such calcareous sediments and differentiation of molluscan assemblages. They can be useful for actuopelaeontological analysis essential for palaeogeographical and palaeoecological interpretations of tufas of Holocene and Late Glacial age occurred in Southern Poland.

Calcareous tufa accumulated during the Late Glacial and Holocene reflect the changes of the environment. Numerous profiles of the mentioned deposits have been described from southern Poland. Profiles of calcareous tufa can be studied using various methods including conditions of sedimentation, geochronology, palaeotemperatures as well as plants and animals remains. Results of these analyses are the basis of the reconstruction of the palaeoenvironment, climatic changes and human impact. Selected localities of the mentioned deposits, representing the most complete sequences, should be promoted to the international geological heritage list.

14 C concentration measurements together with carbon and oxygen stable isotope analysis in calcareous tufa give possibilities for reconstruction of time scale and palaeoclimatic conditions of sedimentary processes. Results of isotope examinations of 2 profiles with organic and tufa sediments from Eastern Poland and 8 calcareous tufa sites from Eastern India (Orissa) are given. A systematic error of 14 C conventional age of carbonate fraction of tufa samples as reservoir age (T R ) was estimated. The T R values of different type of tufa sediment are determined by stream water energy. On the basis of known experimental dependence between T R and delta 13 C for tufas deposited in high, average and low energy water, unknown values of T R and corrected 14 C ages (T CCA ) were calculated for samples from India tufa sites. Continuous deposition of organic and carbonate sediments in Polish profiles give the possibility to calculate the approximated T CCA ages on the basis of dependence between T CCA and a sample depth in a profile, and time scale reconstruction of delta 13 C and delta 18 O changes in carbonate fraction of tufa samples during the whole Holocene.

Measurements of delta 18 O and delta 13 C in tufa samples dated by 14 C method have been used to reconstruct climatic changes in Southern and Eastern Poland and in Eastern India (Orissa) for the last ca 13,500 years. Stable isotope time record delta 18 O in calcareous tufa profiles can be interpreted as palaeoclimatic record if dependence between oxygen isotope composition and temperature for the specific climatic region is known. Estimated sedimentation temperatures of calcareous tufas from Polish sites indicate the mean year of air temperatures during the last 12,000 years and mean winter and summer temperature for Orissa state, using stable isotope analysis for calcareous tufa from Indian sites. The estimated temperatures have real values, comparable with contemporaneous sedimentation temperature. The characteristic trend of the temperature changes increasing for Poland and decreasing for Orissa, since the beginning of the Holocene till today, can be observed with climatic optimum ca 5000-6000 BP synchronous in both countries.
