Due to the aging of bitumen, its durability decreases and the performance characteristics of the roofing materials manufactured from this bitumen significantly deteriorate. As a consequence, roof repairs are required, which results in the increase of the building operating costs. The article discusses factors affecting the durability of roofing membrane, especially the intensity of bitumen aging and the changes in the physical properties of bitumen contained in the roofing membrane. The article presents the results of studies of bitumen modified with substances which lead to the slow-down of the aging process.
