Purpose: In recent years, it has become extremely important to search for more and more natural and biocompatible materials that allow for the reconstruction of natural tissues with as few side effects as possible. The aim of the present paper is to define mechanical properties such as compressive stress and Young’s Modulus and to estimate the ability of human bone cell strains to form biofilm on bioresorbable composites manufactured of polylactide and poly-l-lactide (PLA and PLLA) and hydroxyapatite and tricalcium phosphate (HA and β-TCP) with the use of Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) method. Methods: Microbiological tests were conducted on three variants of solid specimen made with additive laser technology. Samples with different chemical compositions were made with appropriate manufacturing parameters ensuring stability of both composite ingredients. Microbiological in vitro tests helped to determine cytotoxicity of specific samples toward bone cells. Results: The results obtained indicate significantly increased ability of osteoblasts to form colonies on the surface of materials with higher content of hydroxyapatite ceramics compared to surfaces of lower hydroxyapatite content. Conclusions: The data provided can be useful for future applications of the SLS technology in production of bioresorbable PLA/PLLA/HA/β-TCP medical implants.

Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive coccus) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Gram-negative bacterium) are the leading etiologic agents of biofilm-related, life-threatening infections in patients after orthopaedic implantations. The aim of the present paper is to estimate the ability of these two bacterial strains to form a biofilm on bioresorbable composites manufactured from polylactide (PLA) and hydroxyapatite (HA) with the use of Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) method. Methods: Microbiological tests were conducted on two variants of a solid specimen made with additive laser technology. Samples with different content of hydroxyapatite were made, with appropriate manufacturing parameters to ensure stability of both composite ingredients. The geometry of samples was obtained by technical computed tomography. Microbiological tests determined the number of bacterial cells after incubation. Results: The results indicate significantly decreased ability of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa to form biofilms on the surface of materials with higher content of hydroxyapatite ceramics. Conclusions: The data may be useful for future applications of SLS technology in the production of bioresorbable PLA/HA medical implants

Recent advances in general medicine led to the development of biomaterials. Implant material should be characterized by a high biocompatibility to the tissue and appropriate functionality, i.e. to have high mechanical and electrical strength and be stable in an electrolyte environment – these are the most important properties of bioceramic materials. Considerations of biomaterials design embrace also electrical properties occurring on the implant-body fluid interface and consequently the electrokinetic potential, which can be altered by modifying the surface of the implant. In this work, the surface of the implants was modified to decrease the risk of infection by using metal colloids. Nanocolloids were obtained using different chemical and electrical methods. It was found that the colloids obtained by physical and electrical methods are more stable than colloids obtained by chemical route. In this work the surface of modified corundum implants was investigated. The implant modified by nanosilver, obtained by electrical method was selected. The in vivo research on animals was carried out. Clinical observations showed that the implants with modified surface could be applied to wounds caused by atherosclerotic skeleton, for curing the chronic and bacterial inflammations as well as for skeletal reconstruction surgery.

Nano-size β-tricalcium phosphate powders with average grain size of 80 nm were prepared by the wet chemical precipitation method with calcium nitrate and di-ammonium hydrogen phosphate as calcium and phosphorus precursors, respectively. The precipitation process employed was also found to be suitable for the production of sub-micrometre β-TCP powder in situ. The sinterability of the nano-size powders, and the microstructure, mechanical strength of the prepared β-TCP bioceramics were investigated. Bioceramic sample characterization was achieved by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and density measurements. Powders compacted and sintered at 800, 900, 1000 and 1100 °C showed an increase in relative density from 70 % to 93 %. The results revealed that the maximum hardness of 240 HV was obtained for β-TCP sintered at 1100 °C.
