Since September 11, 2001 the whole world have focused on Afghanistan. The man who challenged the United States, Osama bin Laden, and the initiator of terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon lives in hiding in this country. The problem of terrorism in the contemporary world is analysed in many press, radio and TV commentaries. This article, taking this very important problem into account, pays attention to the roots of today's threat. It is not accidental that Afghanistan was chosen the main seat of Al Qaeda. Today's events in Afghanistan are closely connected with the political crisis that took place during the Cold War between the USA and the USSR. Afghanistan is part of the Middle East.

The events of September 11 started a new chapter in the theory and practice of security. The Americans consequently and methodically build the bases of their new security strategy. Two strategic reviews created its starting point: Quadrennial Defense Review and Nuclear Posture Review. This year they introduced two general national strategies: National Strategy for Homeland Security and National Security Strategy of the United States. The USA new defence security strategy and relevant documents are presented in the article. In the final part of the article the author has discussed the campaign planned to be held in Iraq in the aspect of the USA new strategic assumptions.

Contemporary development of civilisation and its consequences cause that both security and connected with it policy change radically in comparison to previous year’s state. Hence the question arises what the future security policy should look like and what role its main element - armed forces will play in it. The aim of the article is to answer this question. The author, being aware of the vastness of the problem under consideration, possibilities to analyse it from many various and different points of view and reaching various, contradictory sometimes and alternative conclusions and evaluations, presents his personal generalisations and conclusions using available literature of the subject matter.
