The development of earth sciences began in Gdańsk in the early 18th century, as documented in the publications of the Gdańsk Natural Science Society and the staff of Gymnasium Academicum. The wealthy young people attended the best European universities, and as educated citizens and city authorities, they developed the economy, culture and education. From the Middle Ages to the present day, Gdańsk has been open to European influences. The organizational framework for geological research began at the end of the 19th century with soil cartography based on geological analysis of subsoils and borehole sections, as well as the use of stratigraphy for sedimentary formations. The Technische Hochschule Danzig was established in 1904. The Department of Geology and Mineralogy was created within the school and existed until the end of World War II in January 1945. The decision to establish a Polish high school as an institution named Politechnika Gdańska (Technical University of Gdańsk) was made in May of that year. Many other high schools, research institutes and geological companies were established in the Three-City area (Gdańsk-Sopot-Gdynia) in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. A wide range of geological investigations, projects and engineering educa¬tion continued for decades. The golden age of Gdańsk geology and hydrogeology was at the turn of the 21st century.
