Castoridae (Rodentia) from the Villafranchian site of Węże 2 in southern Poland

Several isolated teeth and jaw fragments of beavers (Rodentia: Castoridae), discovered at the Villafranchian (MN 16b?) site of Węże 2 in southern Poland, are attributable to two species: Dipoides ex gr. problematicus-sigmodus and Trogontherium (Euroxenomys) minus. The genus Dipoides and the species Trogontherium (Euroxenomys) minus have not previously been reported from Poland. Their presence at the Węże 2 site suggests that these lesser-known and extinct representatives of the Castoridae were adapted to similar conditions as the modern species (Castor fiber and C. canadensis).

Przez ostatnie stulecia człowiek gwałtownie modyfikował środowisko zaburzając funkcjonowanie ekosystemów i obniżając ich naturalną produktywność. Doprowadziło to do zubożenia wielu obszarów, które obecnie nie 100 zaspokajają potrzeb życiowych wielu gatunków dzikich zwierząt [Mroczek, Pączka 2009]. W krajobrazie polnym i leśnym doszło do zmian, których konsekwencją jest wzrost liczebności populacji niektórych gatunków, co z kolei ma dalszy wpływ na jakościowe i ilościowe zmiany w krajobrazie. Synantropizacja środowiska przejawia się m.in. budowaniem ciągów ogrodzeń czy wytyczaniem w pobliżu lasów autostrad oraz dróg szybkiego ruchu przerywających naturalne korytarze ekologiczne i sprawia, że główną bazą żerową zwierząt dziko żyjących stały się grunty uprawne, ponieważ naturalne siedliska leśne zostały przeciążone [Wójcik 2011].

Beaver, wild boar and deer play important roles in the ecosystems and contribute to the functioning of complex relationships in the nature. They are an element of ecosystem services. Because they become a new synanthropic species and the anthropopressure changed their home ranges, they are competing for space and resources with human. As a consequence, damages and losses are notified. According to the sustainable development we must take their needs and requirements into account in order for them to become partakers, not pests, in habitats occupied together with a man. In shaping a new look for the presence of expansive species, help of different professions is needed, including landscape architects and representatives of modern educational services. They should shape the attitudes of the inhabitants of rural areas. The acceptance of actions to support ecosystem services based on biological diversity is urgently needed.

Celem pracy była analiza wielkości szkód wyrządzanych przez bobry w ujęciu strat materialnych oraz ujęciu ekonomicznym znajdującym odzwierciedlenie w kwotach wypłacanych odszkodowań z tytułu szkód. Badania prowadzono od 2003 do 2012 roku na Podkarpaciu. W podsumowaniu stwierdzono, że w obecnych uwarunkowaniach ekonomiczno-prawnych, najbardziej skutecznym rozwiązaniem wzrastającej problematyki szkód wyrządzanych przez bobry, a tym samym i potencjalnie rodzących się konfliktów społecznych na tym tle, wydaje się być zrównoważony poziom redukcji liczebności populacji w miejscach o wysokich wskaźnikach zagęszczeń poprzez odłów lub ewentualnie w drodze odstrzału.

The aim of the study was to assess the diversity of the damages caused by beavers in various structures of ecosystems in terms of property damage and economic terms reflected in the amounts of compensation paid for damages. The study area included the Podkarpacie Province in 2003-2012. During the study period, there was an increase of damages in terms of the quantity and the amount of compensations paid, both in forest environments, agricultural lands, agricultural crops, as well as technical infrastructure facilities of hydraulic objects. The calculated structure of the damage severity in terms of the amount of compensation paid indicates that beavers made the most serious damages in the fish farms to the technical infrastructure facilities of hydraulic objects during the evaluation. The claims amounted to 34.7% of the total pool paid for such damages. The second largest beaver interactions in habitats were tree stands of younger age classes that have not yet developed the felling assortments, where the pool of compensation for damages was 27.5% of the total sum of claims paid. Damage to agricultural land in terms of both surface and amounts should be assessed as low, which also does not mean that they are insignificant for rural economy. The increase in damage caused by beavers in various structures of ecosystems should be directly linked with a rapidly growing population of this species, the increase of which during the study period in the country reached about 251%, and according to the inventory data from 2011, the population in the whole country was estimated for 78.1 thousand of individuals. The structure of the damage size in various sectors of the economy is directly associated with the beaver’s behavior and the range of prey.

W ostatnich latach nastąpił wyraźny wzrost populacji bobra. Na terenie województwa lubuskiego bobry niszczą brzegi rzek oraz korpusy wałów przeciwpowodziowych. Stwarzają w ten sposób istotny problem w utrzymaniu sprawnego systemu zabezpieczenia przeciwpowodziowego, funkcjonującego w dolinach Odry, Warty i Noteci. W artykule podano przykłady zniszczeń dokonanych przez bobry oraz zaproponowano kilka sposobów pozwalających na likwidację istniejącego zagrożenia.

In the last years has been distinctly appeared the increase in beavers population. On the area of the province Lubuskie the beavers destruct the river banks and embankments. In result of that there appears a serious problem of maintenance the efficient system of flood protection which is functioning in the valleys of the Oder, the Warta and the Noteć. In the paper there are presented examples of deteriorations caused by beavers and there have been proposed some ways for liquidation of the existing danger.
