In the process of creation of the SDI in Poland a particular role is played by the VMap L2 database, since it is the only digital, topographic product covering the entire country. Although considerable funds have been engaged in development of that database, it is not widely applied yet. This results from the fact that the VMap L2 conceptual model is complicated, as well as from the lack of accessible tools of cartographically correct re-symbolisation of VMap data in the environment of popular GIS software packages. Realising the necessity to convert VMap L2 data of the first edition in order to rationalise their utilisation, the authors considered two independent directions of proposed modifications. The first direction is based on internal integration of particular classes of objects of the VMap database, while the other one assumes that the TDB (Topographic Data Base) data model is approved as the final topographic database structure in Poland. Such an approach would allow to develop a coherent, multi-scale reference database in Poland, as a MRDB (Multirepresentation/Multiresolution Data Base) type database. Apart from the decision concerning the form of the .final. database, the authors attempted to develop open software tools, which would convert the VMap data through utilisation of modifiable configuration files. This would allow an easy scaling of the system and to utilise it for import of VMap L2 data of the new (second) edition to an arbitrary, usable structure of the topographic, reference database in Poland. An important component of the system under development is the set of software tools, which automate both the process of data conversion and their cartographic re-symbolisation, performed in ESRI, Intergraph and MapInfo environments.
