This study evaluated the performance of nanofiltration (NF) membrane for the treatment of hand-drawn batik wastewater containing synthetic dyes as well as real batik wastewater. Three commercial NF membranes (NF270, TS40 and XN45) were used. The effect of transmembrane pressure, NF membrane types, synthetic dyes concentration, and solution types on flux and rejection were investigated. The results showed that the use of all NF membranes could reach dye removal of ca. 99%. NF270 membrane exhibited the highest flux, 2–3 times higher than that of TS40 and XN45 membranes. NF270 membrane was further used for treating real batik wastewater. The results showed high rejections in terms of total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total dissolved solids (TDS) were obtained. The practical applicability of NF270 membrane for real handdrawn batik wastewater treatment fulfilled the quality standards in terms of TSS, COD, and BOD parameters. Overall, the NF270 membrane showed favorable performance for batik effluent treatment.

The batik industry is one of the Indonesian economic drivers. However, most of the batik industries discharge their wastewater without any prior treatment, thus endangering the environment. This research aims to investigate the ability of hybrid constructed wetlands (CWs) system using Canna indica in the batik wastewater treatment. The parameters studied were chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solid (TSS), and oil and grease (FOG) with 3, 5, and 7 days of hydraulic retention time (HRT). The results indicate that the hybrid constructed wetland system using Canna indica optimally gains the COD and FOG removal efficiency on day 3 at 89.61% and 89.53%, while the TSS removal efficiency on day 5 at 98.74%. Despite the high removal efficiency, the effluent parameters remain below the standards for direct discharge into waterbodies. Therefore, further research is needed to investigate the appropriate pre-/advanced treatment to be combined with the hybrid constructed wetland in batik wastewater treatment.

The batik industry became a double-edged sword for the development of Indonesia. While it plays a significant role in economy, it also contributes to the environmental pollution, which is mostly caused by the lack of appropriate technology for the wastewater treatment in small industries. This study aims at determining the feasibility in combining the coagulation-flocculation technology using Moringa oleifera seeds powder (MOSP) with horizontal subsurface constructed wetland (HSSFCW) in treating the batik wastewater. The results show that combining 750 mg/L MOSP in the coagulation flocculation technology with 5 days retention time on HSSFCW optimally removed 89.33% of the chemical oxygen demand (COD); 98.11% of total suspended solids (TSS); and 92.05% of fat, oil, and grease (FOG). Moreover, it increases the pH conditions up to 7.33. Despite its high removal efficiency, this technology combination is not feasible in the batik wastewater treatment due to inability to meet the standard effluent of the discharged wastewater. Therefore, adding pre-post treatment to this technology implementation is recommended to obtain the standard effluents of wastewater discharged.
