Fe and Mn metal ions in acid mine drainage can contaminate water bodies and soil, endangering human health. In this study, the adsorption of Fe and Mn in acid mine drainage was carried out using manganese greensand. This study aimed to obtain 1) the adsorption model of Fe and Mn isotherms using manganese greensand and 2) the surface morphology of manganese greensand before and after the adsorption process. This study used laboratory-scale experimental methods with variable concentrations of Fe (325, 400, 475, 550, 625 mg/L) and Mn (432, 507, 582, 657, 732 mg/L). The Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherm models were used to determine the adsorption capacity of Fe and Mn by manganese greensand. Test for Fe and Mn content using the AAS method and test the surface morphology and content of manganese greensand using SEM-EDX. The results showed that: (1) the Freundlich equation test yielded for Fe: in a constant R2 of 0.9862, n = 0.6912, KB = 0.2180 mg/g, while the Langmuir equation test yielded in a constant R2 of 0.8836, b = 0.0051 L/mg, qm = 169.4915 mg/g; the Freundlich equation test yielded for Mn: in a constant R2 of 0.9923, n = 0.8651, KB = 1.0445 mg/g, while the Langmuir equation test yielded in a constant R2 of 0.6615, b = 0.0010 L/mg, qm = 500 mg/g; (2) The surface morphology of manganese greensand before contact with acid mine drainage contains needle-shaped particles of uniform size with a hexagonal structure, whereas, after contact with acid mine drainage, the particles are clumped like cotton and form needles with varying sizes.

Growing expectations of clients, who demand products adapted to their individual needs is inducing the development of batch processes. The author developed a model of batch processes rating based on the following criterions: - Economical criterion applies to evaluation of the productions’ cost levels connected with the process subjected to analysis and necessary investment funds. - Ecological criterion is about means of natural environment protection, utilization and segregation of wastes and usage of various media. This criterion is about social responsibility of companies. - Social criterion concerns working conditions (ergonomics on work centers), requirements on personnel qualifications and satisfaction from work - rated for example by measuring absence at work or with survey. - The market criterion is about evaluation if the product or additional services meet clients’ individual needs and if the prices and time between the product beening ordered and delivered to the client are elastic. It is about evaluation of product based on clients’ point of view. - Technological criterion, which concerns implementation of production process course, is based on machines’ work and production workers’ work evaluation. - General development criterion allows the evaluation of a companies’ state not only by measuring fulfilled production processes, but by its general condition as well. - Planning criterion is related to fulfilling general production schedules, which is one of the main targets of production control For each criterion the authors performed selection of indicators, which enable evaluation of the process. Developed conception allows performing complex and synthetic evaluation of batch processes.

Trafne decyzje operacyjne dotyczące poza procesami produkcyjnymi także planowania prac remontowych, decyzji zakupowych, przewidywania zmian rynkowych mogą zapewnić istotną przewagę konkurencyjną. Wsparciem takich decyzji, opartym na danych historycznych, może być wnioskowanie statystyczne. Zaawansowane metody statystyczne, pomimo empirycznych ograniczeń, mogą zapewnić wymaganą dokładność prognoz oraz moc testów statystycznych. Artykuł prezentuje propozycje wykorzystania parametrycznych i nieparametrycznych metod statystycznych oraz oszacowania mierzalnych korzyści zastosowania wnioskowania statystycznego w pewnych modelowych przedsiębiorstwach stosujących procesy wsadowe.

Accurate operational decisions regarding not only production processes but also planning renovations, purchasing decisions, prediction of changes in the market can lead to a significant competitive advantage. The support of such a decision, based on historical data may be statistical inference. Advanced statistical methods can provide the required accuracy of forecasts and the power of statistical tests despite the empirical limitations. This paper presents proposals for the use of parametric and non-parametric statistical methods and estimation of quantitative advantages of statistical inference in certain models of enterprises using batch processes.

Contamination of soil and groundwater with pesticides is mainly caused by old ecological burdens. This study focuses on the treatment of groundwater contaminated with chlorinated pesticides. The contaminants mainly include α-HCH, β-HCH, γ-HCH, HCB, DDE, DDD and DDT. Reverse osmosis technology using RO98pHt polyamide membranes was used to remove the pollutants under batch process conditions. The observed rate of removal ranged from 98.4% to 99.7%. Total dissolved content solids decreased from 1.35 g/dm3 to below 0.05 g/dm3.

Biosynthesis of lovastatin (a polyketide metabolite of Aspergillus terreus) in bioreactors of different working volume was studied to indicate how the change of scale of the process influences the formation of this metabolite. The experiments conducted in shake flasks of 150 ml working volume allowed to obtain lovastatin titres at the level of 87.5 mg LOV l-1, when two carbon sources, namely lactose and glycerol were used. The application of the same components in a large stirred-tank bioreactor of 5.3-litre working volume caused a decrease of lovastatin production by 87% compared to the shake flask culture. The deficiency of nitrogen in this bioreactor did not favour the formation of lovastatin, in contrast to the small bioreactor of 1.95-litre working volume, in which lovastatin titres comparable to those in the shake flasks could be achieved, when organic nitrogen concentration was two-fold decreased. When the control of pH and/or pO2 was used simultaneously, an increase in lovastatin production was observed in the bioreactors. However, these results were still slightly lower than lovastatin titres obtained in the shake flasks.

During the nineties, the SP88 committee developed the ANSI/ ISA-S88 standard to improve the maintainability, flexibility, documentation (and other enhancements) of batch control plants. This standard links sequence- and formula- management software (on a computer platform) with control equipment (on a PLC or controller platform) in a structured way. The S88 models are developed to be as universal as possible. The implementation of a discrete process is treated in this paper. The presented application proves that a discrete process can be automated based on the S88 models as well, but the approach can differ from batching. For re-engineering an existing plant, the Bottom-Up is a good approach in general for small applications. The application of this paper introduces basic models and terminology of S88, and guidelines how to implement them.

W latach 90., komitet SP88 stworzył standard ANS1/ISA-S88, aby polepszyć projektowanie, zarządzanie i dokumentacje procesów wsadowych. Opracowany standard łączy ze sobą oprogramowanie zarządzające sekwencjami i formułami (bazujące na platformie PC) ze sterowaniem urządzeniami (platforma PLC) w oparciu o zdefiniowane struktury. Tworzone modele S88 są uniwersalne. Implementacja procesu dyskretnego jest omówiona w niniejszej pracy. Zaprezentowana aplikacja dowodzi, że proces dyskretny może być zautomatyzowany w oparciu o modele S88. Do analizy mniejszych aplikacji dobrym narzędziem jest programowanie wstępujące (Bottom-Up approach). Prezentowana praca przedstawia podstawowe modele i terminologię S88 oraz wskazówki dotyczące implementacji.
