Coefficient of optimal structure in relation to wood density in Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst.) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). The aim of these study was to verify whether there is a relationship between the visual image of macrostructure expressed by COS and wood basic density in spruce and pine. Analyses were conducted on wood of wind-broken trees of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst.). The coefficient of optimal structure (COS) shows high correlation with density in spruce and pine wood in the lower buttress section of the stem (at a height of 1.3 m - 4 m). Spearman’s correlation coefficients are around 0.7 - 0.8.In the upper part of the stem at a height o.
