Seismic attributes are an invaluable tool supporting the interpretation of structurally complex areas. They can be used at each stage of structural analysis: 1) the reconnaissance of the structural style based on 3D seismic survey; 2) detailed analysis of fractures 3) QC (Quality Control) and the verification of structural interpretation. This paper illustrates how seismic attributes can be successfully applied to the analysis of structurally complex basins, using examples from the Bonaparte Basin, North West Shelf of Australia. The North West Shelf of Australia (NWSA) is an important petroleum province (dominantly gas accumulations, oil occurs in minor “sweet spots”). Hydrocarbons within the NWSA were captured in complex structural traps. For this reason detailed structural analysis of this area is essential to understand the relationship between strain, fault geometry and linkage, which allow a preliminary assessment of trap integrity. The results show that seismic attributes such as Semblance or Combo Volume provide immediate and efficient insight into structural evaluation of 3D seismic data. RMS Amplitude, Shaded Relief and Principal Components are proved to be useful for enhancing fracture patterns (e.g. polygonal faulting) that are usually poorly resolved on conventional amplitude seismic data.
