A lack of adequate standards for testing the endurance of balls of different diameters is clearly visible. The existing methods for granulate strength determination lead to certain difficulties in a reliable comparison of results. Therefore compression strength tests ought to be standardised and data obtained should enable one to calculate the tensile strength.
Investigations into influence of the chute packing and diameter on the ball strength and size in a new-type balling machine are presented. The degree of chute packing is a major determinant of balling machine performance, so this parameter was thoroughly investigated. The ball compression strength and ball size distributions (necessary for calculating the average ball size) were assumed as qualitative parameters.
