Effect of water disinfection by means of chlorine dioxide on healthy properties of water

In the process of water purification the following operations have been conducted: initial ozonation, coagulation, filtration on anthracite-and-sand bed, indirect ozonation, filtration on carbon bed, disinfection. At the stage of water disinfection after the process of sorption on carbon filter, chlorine and chlorine dioxide have been applied as disinfectants. The dependence of trihalomethanes (THM) concentration being formed in the process of water disinfection on the kind and dose of a coagulant has been established. While applying chlorine as a disinfectant, the lowest concentration of THM occurs for a coagulant WAC HB having the dose of 4.1 mg A1×dm-3. Using chlorine dioxide in the process of disinfection causes recurring many times drop in the concentration of trihalomethanes; at the same time this concentration does not depend on the type of a coagulant or its dose. The results showed that the bacteriostatic effect of the ClO2 is similar to or better that of' chlorine.
