The aim of the study was to compare the load on the vertebral discs and on the back and abdominal muscles of a person in two different postures and seven various values of backpack mass expressed as a % of body mass, by using a detailed computer-based model of the torso (with special interest in the lumbar region of the spine). The results confirmed that bent posture is more strenuous then the erected posture. In bent posture energy in muscles and stress in intervertebral discs is higher. In case when the backpack mass is higher then 35-40% of body mass, the muscle energy as well as the stress in intervertebral discs increases rapidly.
