In 2013–2018, it is intended to implement a program to document available groundwater resources in the up-to-now undocumented 40 balance areas. The work will be carried out in two tranches and four stages; in each of these stages, 8–13 documentations will be made. A tranche is composed of two modes of work: short mode – preparation of hydrogeological documentations, and full mode – implementation of the program and preparation of hydrogeological documentations. The currently ongoing work, to document available groundwater resources, includes preparation of 19 documentations (9 documentations in the first stage, and 10 in the second stage). The Polish Geological Institute is the main executor and coordinator of this task.

Aktualnie prowadzone prace związane z poszukiwaniem, rozpoznawaniem a w przyszłości również możliwą eksploatacją niekonwencjonalnych złóż węglowodorów oraz wiążącym się z tą działalnością zapotrzebowaniem na znaczne ilości wód, w tym również wód podziemnych, wymusiły przyspieszenie prac związanych z udokumentowaniem zasobów wód podziemnych w obszarach dotychczas nieudokumentowanych. W artykule przedstawiono aktualny stan udokumentowania zasobów dyspozycyjnych wód podziemnych oraz plan 6-letniego przedsięwzięcia, mającego na celu udokumentowanie zasobów dyspozycyjnych wód podziemnych na obszarach dotychczas nieudokumentowanych.

The currently ongoing works to locate, identify and possibly future exploit the unconventional hydrocarbons as well as the coupled with this activity large water demand including groundwater, forced the intensification of works to document the groundwater resources in the areas which has not been documented yet. The paper shows the present state of the groundwater resources documentation process as well as presents the initiation of the 6 year program to document these resources in the not-till-now documented areas.

Prowadzona przez państwową służbę hydrogeologiczną (PSH) inwentaryzacja stanu udokumentowania zasobów dyspozycyjnych wód podziemnych wykazała, że aktualnie (stan na dzień 28.02.2011 r.) zasoby dyspozycyjne zostały ustalone dla obszarów o powierzchni stanowiącej około 46% kraju. Dostępne dla zagospodarowania zasoby wód podziemnych (dyspozycyjne i perspektywiczne łącznie), zostały ustalone dla całego obszarze kraju w ilości 37,3 mln m3/dobę (13,6 km3/rok). Przeprowadzony w skali kraju bilans wykazuje rezerwy wód podziemnych dostępnych do zagospodarowania w wysokości około 80%.

The inventory of the identified available groundwater resources revealed that those resources have already been assessed for about 46% of the country’s area (according to the condition as at 28 Feb 2011). The disposable groundwater resources (available and perspective) amount to 37.3 mln m3/day (13.6 km3/year). The national groundwater balance, estimated taking into account the amount of the national groundwater abstraction volume, shows the reserves being at circa 80% of the disposable groundwater resources.

The paper presents the author’s approach to the quantitative assessment of the river catchment available groundwater resources in case of the Łeba River catchment in Poland. A strong emphasis is put on the evaluation of the groundwater flow system renewability which should always precede the resources model simulations. After assessing the catchment recharge using river flow records and a big lysimeter approximation the recharge distribution was calculated using the author’s constant volume transformation (CVT) method. The subsequent construction of the groundwater flow model and application of the CVT method coupled with the virtual wells concept led to the evaluation of the amount and distribution of the available groundwater resources in the catchment.
