Low-power consumption and long-distance transmission are two problems that have to be solved by the application of broadband power line communication for the automatic meter reading system. To reduce the power consumption of the communication module, based on the analysis of the composition of the power consumption, some methods are proposed. From the communication chip level and the module circuit level, the design scheme of low-power consumption is given. To solve the problem of transmission distance, a frequency band of 2.44 MHz~5.6 MHz is used as the main working frequency band. The communication module supports multiple frequency bands. Using this feature, the optimal frequency band is adaptively selected for communication and automatic switching, which further improve the transmission distance. Field application shows that the above methods effectively decrease the power consumption of the communication module and extend the transmission distance.

Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) system is expected to be used for real time load monitoring to optimize power generation and energy efficiency. Recently, it has been a serious problem that user’s lifestyle may be revealed by a tool to estimate consumer’s lifestyle from a real-time load profile. In order to solve this issue, Battery-based Load Hiding ( BLH ) algorithms are proposed to obfuscate an actual load profile by charging and discharging. Although such BLH algorithms have already been studied, it is important to consider multiple households case where one battery is shared among them due to its high cost. In this paper, a monetary fair BLH algorithm for multiple households is proposed. In presented scheme, the core unit calculates the difference between the charged amount and discharged one for each household. If the difference is bigger than the predefined threshold (monetary unfair occurs), the most disadvantageous and advantageous households are given priority to discharge and charge the battery and other households should charge to achieve monetary fairness. The efficiency of the scheme is demonstrated through the computer simulation with a real dataset.

New research trends in energy grids and water networks push toward ICT solutions for allowing remote metering of consumption. In the paper, after an introduction to the European Standards on smart metering, two visual sensors thought to solve typical metering problems in water public networks are described. Particular detail is given hardware and software solutions and the perspective of integration with analog gas and electric energy metering devices.

The paper presents a method of improving the effectiveness of remote reading of energy meters (such as: electricity, gas and heat), with a system solutions consisting of the network topology control. Control is such a selection and eventual elimination of links to obtain a chordal ring network topology. It is shown an analysis of the use of three types of chordal rings: one fourth degree and two of the third degree, dedicated for wireless telemetry solutions. Measure of improving the effectiveness of the meters readings are: increase the reliability of readings, and reduction of a readout time.

W artykule przedstawiono metodę poprawy skuteczności zdalnych odczytów liczników energii (elektrycznej, gazu, ciepła), dzięki rozwiązaniom systemowym polegającym na kontroli topologii sieci. Kontrola polega na takim doborze i ewentualnej eliminacji łączy w sposób programowy, aby uzyskać sieć o topologii pierścieni cięciwowych. Dokonano analizy możliwości zastosowania trzech typów pierścieni cięciwowych: jednego czwartego stopnia oraz dwu trzeciego stopnia, w bezprzewodowych sieciach telemetrycznych. Miarą poprawy skuteczności odczytów są zwiększenie niezawodności odczytów oraz zmniejszenie czasu odczytu.

The article presents technological solutions of the communication and data transmission area that are indispensable for the organization of smart metering. As the term “smart metering” is very broad, particular attention has been focused on solutions based on the GSM-based wireless transmission that makes possible to flexibly model the process of remote meter reading with the use of the existing technological infrastructure. The article determines factors that can decide over the application of a such communication type as well as technical specifications to be met in order to develop a system that could successfully operate over an extensive network. Characteristics of the communication equipment used in real-time metering and billing systems have also been presented.

Przedstawiono zalety i wady tych systemów, klasyfikację oraz uwarunkowania dotyczące zastosowań w gazownictwie. Zamieszczono krótki opis testów radiowych systemów odczytowych, wykonywanych w INiG.

The paper presents Automatic Meter Reading Systems (AMR) for gas household consumers. The advantages and disadvantages are described, also specific grading and conditions for applications in gas industry are listed. The presentation of results of different AMR systems tests performed in INiG is also attached.
