In the paper theoretical bases of area calculation of geodetic polygons on an ellipsoid are presented. Several methods are described. The first one is based on approximation of a polygon by elementary trapezoids delineated by parallels and meridians. The second method uses approximation of an ellipsoidal polygon by elementary spherical triangles. In the third method an equal-area projection of ellipsoid onto sphere is employed. The forth method uses an equal-area projection of ellipsoid onto plane. In the fifth method reduction of area located between curved image of geodetic line and its chord is presented. The methods described provide competitive and more general solutions than those presented in literature which are applicable only to small ellipsoidal areas.
