Artykuł jest zbiorem refleksji na temat projektowania form upamiętnień w miejscach, w których rozegrały się tragiczne dla naszego narodu wydarzenia z okresu II wojny światowej. Przedstawiono w nim kategorie takich miejsc oraz przykłady rozwiązań projektowych obrazujące pewne tendencje i dające się zauważyć zasady. Rozważania powstały na podstawie badań kilkuset założeń komemoratywnych w miejscach kaźni na terenie całego kraju, kwerendy archiwalnej fotografii dokumentujących te wydarzenia oraz prześledzenia działań służących zachowaniu ich w pamięci naszego i innych narodów.

This article is a collection of reflections on the design of forms of commemoration at the sites where some of the tragic events happened to our nation during World War II. The article presents various categories of such sites and shows examples of design solutions illustrating certain tendencies and principles that can be observed nowadays. The considerations are based on a study of several hundred commemorative sites built at places of executions and other places related to suffering throughout the country, an archival search for photographs documenting these events, and the tracing of activities serving to preserve them in our nation’s collective memory and in the consciousness of other nations.

The aim of this presentation is to demonstrate issues concerning places of remembrance, paying special attention to the elements which create meaning and structure collective experience. The analysis will be conducted not only on the level of architectural materials but the current knowledge about psychology of perception (narrative perception) will also be included. Another aim of the presentation is to assess Polish current architectural projects against the background of international accomplishments. Projects implemented by students from Warsaw University of Technology Faculty of Religious and Monumental Architecture under the management of professor Konrad Kucza-Kuczyński will be presented. The presentation is intended for young scientists of different branches, not only those of architecture and construction.The presentation constitutes part of post-doctoral paper written under Dean’s Grant at the Faculty of Architecture at Warsaw University of Technology in 2011.

Praca prezentuje problematykę współczesnych miejsc pamięci. Artykuł jest częścią badań prowadzonych na Wydziale Architektury PW. Analiza ma charakter interdyscyplinarny, włączając w badania architektury badania narracyjne w psychologii współczesnej. Architektury, w której zaprojektowana narracja ma za zadanie nie tylko komunikować się z odbiorcą i oddziaływać na niego, ale również stanowić drogę do wglądu w dane wydarzenie. Dostęp do doświadczeń wspólnoty poprzez elementy architektury gwarantuje poczucie bezpieczeństwa i stabilność danej społeczności.

The paper presents the issues connected with contemporary places of remembrance. The analysis has an interdisciplinary nature with narrative research in contemporary psychology. Access to the experience of the community through elements of architecture arouses a feeling of safety and stability in a given community.
