The essay presents a fragment of the latest research that the Author has performed on the topic of the concept of beauty, viewed from the perspective of the cultural changes that took place throughout history, in relation to the spatial creations of cities. Urban aesthetics, so rarely taken into account in modern science, have been given due attention at the point at which theory meets practice. The territorial scope of the research extends from the Middle East and Egypt, through Europe, to the United States of America. The scope of history under analysis includes the time since the beginning of the construction of cities to the break of the XX century ‒ the time of the appearance of the first clear signs of the Modern Movement.

Autor przedstawia fragment swoich najnowszych badań na temat pojęcia piękna w układzie historycznym, na tle dziejowych przemian kulturowych, w powiązaniu z kreacjami przestrzennymi miast. Rzadko uprawiana we współczesnej nauce etyka urbanistyczna została w niniejszym artykule ujęta syntetycznie, na styku teorii z empirią. Zakres terytorialny badań rozciąga się do Bliskiego Wschodu i Egiptu poprzez Europę, po USA. Zakres czasowy obejmuje okres od zarania budowy miast do przełomu XIX i XX wieku, to jest do czasu pojawienia się konkretnych zwiastunów Ruchu Nowoczesnego.

The author discusses the interrelationships between play and the art of urbanism focusing on the cluster of nodal places called here “nodes of urbanity”. At the background of Huizinga’s theory of Homo ludens as cultural component, the analysis of these foci of urban life seem to have explanatory value for architectural and anthropological theories of the “Ludic City”. The main points of this conceptual framework are illustrated with two cases from the city of Krakow.

Autor prowadzi rozważania na temat wzajemnych związków między grą a sztuką urbanistyczną koncentrując uwagę na skupiskach miejsc węzłowych nazwanych tu „węzłami miejskości”. W świetle teorii Huizinga na temat Homo ludens, i gry jako kluczowego komponentu kultury, analiza tego rodzaju skupisk życia miejskiego wydaje się mieć niemały walor interpretacyjny dla architektonicznych i antropologicznych teorii „Miasta Ludycznego”. Główne tezy metodologicznych koncepcji tego rodzaju analiz zilustrowano dwoma przykładami z Krakowa.

Tekst stanowi próbę przedstawienia twórczości niemieckiego architekta Hansa Kollhoffa w kontekście jego zainteresowania ciągłością idei tradycyjnego miasta europejskiego. Punktem wyjścia dyskursu uczyniono ekspozycję architekta prezentowaną na 13. Międzynarodowej Wystawie Architektury w Wenecji w 2012 roku. Hans Kollhoff swoimi projektami występuje w obronie europejskiej kultury miejskiej i jej sztuki budowania. Szczególnie ważnymi aspektami jego twórczości zdają się być zachowanie tożsamości miasta oraz utrwalanie miejskich typologii i morfologii miejskich fasad.

This article is an attempt to present the work of German architect Hans Kollhoff in the context of his interest in the continuation of the idea of a traditional European city. The starting point of discourse, the architect’s exhibition at the 13th International Exhibition of Architecture in Venice in 2012 has been pointed out. Hans Kollhoff, through his projects, defends European urban culture and its art of building. The preservation of the identity of the city and the consolidation of urban typology and morphology of urban facades seems to be a particularly important aspect of his work.

In this article, the territorial aspects of the idea of tomorrow's house are viewed from two perspectives; the theory of urbanism, and as a technical issue concerning the formulation of principles of a spatial policy towards the housing environment as well as respective planning techniques with particular reference to the code of practice developed in order to translate these policies into specific regulations and design guidelines. In planning practice, concretizing the general rules of a spatial policy requires a reference to structural urban units. However, while defining their properties in spatial planning documents, we ought to pay more attention to the relationship between the architectural and anthropological attributes of this category of urbanized space and its impact on the utilitarian values of a place of residence. The author also indicates some interdependences between the land use planning techniques, applied as environmental policy tools dedicated specifically to urban structural units, and respective policy statements used in socio-economic planning to guide housing development in accordance with strategic goals. Certain similarities between these strategies are presented as are such theoretical concepts as the architecture of the city, space syntax or the just city.

W niniejszym artykule terytorialne aspekty idei domu jutra rozważane są z dwóch perspektyw: teorii urbanistyki i jako zagadnienie warsztatowe dotyczące formułowania zasad polityki wobec środowiska zamieszkiwania oraz technik zapisu ich ustaleń. W praktyce planistycznej konkretyzowanie ogólnych zasad polityki przestrzennej wymaga ich odniesienia do strukturalnych jednostek urbanistycznych. Jednak określając ich właściwości w dokumentach planowania przestrzennego, należałoby zwrócić większą uwagę na związek między architektonicznymi i antropologicznymi atrybutami tej kategorii przestrzeni zurbanizowanej i jej wpływ na wartości użytkowe miejsca zamieszkiwania. Autor wskazuje też na współzależności między techniką zapisu ustaleń polityki przestrzennej w układzie jednostek urbanistycznych i ustaleniami strategii rozwoju terytorialnego. Dostrzega powinowactwa tych strategii z takimi koncepcjami teoretycznymi, jak: architektura miasta, space syntax, miasto sprawiedliwe.

Jedność dwuczłonu przedstawienie-konstrukcja określa kulturę projektu, który powinien nie tylko rozwiązywać kwestie funkcjonalne, ale poszukiwać istoty konstrukcji jako procesu formalnego badając relację pomiędzy ideą formy a rezultatem.

Article is a sort of a mission statement to bring again architecture and the city in the center of the debate, as a place for ideas and art. In the relationship between the project and the techniques you can find a new and antique condition of the scientific research in architecture. The unity depiction-construction defines a culture of the project which should not only solve functional issues, but investigates the essence of construction as a formal process, as a necessary path studying the relationships between an idea of form and its achievement.

Artykuł podejmuje tematykę architektury współtworzącej transformującą się przestrzeń miejską. Spoglądając na nią w kontekście jej trwania i przemijania, odnajdujemy ogromną dynamikę cechującą tą transformację. Biorąc pod uwagę czasy kryzysu ekonomicznego oraz szybki rozwój obszarów zurbanizowanych, istotne wydaje się poszukiwanie nowego spojrzenia na miasto i architekturę. Istotne jest zrozumienie procesów kształtujących daną przestrzeń i poszukiwanie adekwatnych dla niej metod projektowych.

The paper describes the architecture of the transforming city. While looking at it in the context of continuance and vanishing, we can easily discover great dynamics of this process. In the current uncertain times, it is important to search for new approach to issue of the architecture of the city. It is also important to understand processes shaping our surrounding urban environment and to define proper design methodologies.

W artykule omówiono wpływ kluczowych przedsięwzięć urbanistycznych i wybranych dzieł architektury na rozwój śródmieść Kolonii, Monachium i Stuttgartu. Wyróżniono 5 typów sytuacji projektowych, nadając im nazwy: „domena kultury, nauki i sztuki”, „architektura w krajobrazie parkowym”, „symbole przedsiębiorczości”, „strategiczne węzły przy dworcach kolejowych” i „przebudowa nadbrzeży rzecznych”. Tekst pomyślany jest jako pierwszy z autorskiego cyklu poświęconego śródmiejskiej formie urbanistycznej w niemieckich metropoliach analizowanej z perspektywy strategii urbanistycznych i ich konsekwencji strukturalnych.

Using cases of projects regarded as key elements of urban development strategies in Cologne, Munich and Stuttgart, the author discusses the impact of “flagship” architectural projects and urban design on development of the inner city structure. Five types of design situations have been marked off. They are labelled as: “domain of culture, science and contemporary art”, architecture in landscape park”, “symbols of entrepreneurship”, “strategic nodes in close-to-station areas” and “riverfront redevelopment”. Texts is conceived as the first from the series of the author’s articles devoted to the form of the inner city in German metropolises analysed from the perspective of urban strategies and their structural consequences.

Artykuł jest próbą wykładni pojęcia bezpieczeństwo – fundamentalnej kategorii w teoriach i ideologiach urbanistycznych oraz podstawowe kryterium oceny poprawności decyzji podejmowanych w ramach procedur planowania i projektowania urbanistycznego. Omówiono wpływ tego kryterium na miejskie i metropolitalne polityki przestrzenne. Przedmiotem rozważań autora jest wspólny obszar trzech pól tematycznych nazwanych tu umownie jako: 1) sztuka budowania bezpiecznego miasta, 2) kryterium bezpieczeństwa w teoriach i ideologiach urbanistycznych i 3) bezpieczeństwo w strategiach i politykach rozwoju. Autor określa przyjęte przez siebie podejście mianem urbanistyki strategicznej. Oznacza to, że akcent analiz i założeń koncepcyjnych położony jest na współzależności między strukturalnymi konsekwencjami strategii urbanistycznych i strategicznymi aspektami strukturalnych uwarunkowań rozwoju miejskiego i metropolitalnego.

In this paper term: safety is discussed as a fundamental category of urban theories and ideologies as well as decision making criterion under the framework of urban design and urban planning procedures. A significance of this criterion for the assessment of strategies developed for urban and metropolitan structures is also described. The scope of the author’s considerations is a common field of three thematic areas of urbanism: 1) the art of building safe city, 2) criterion of safety in urban theories and ideologies, 3) the issue of safety in urban strategies and policies. The approach adopted by the author is called here as strategic urbanism. Characteristic feature of this perspective is that in urban analysis and basic conceptual assumptions an emphasize is put on mutual relations between structural consequences of urban strategies and strategic aspects of structural preconditions of urban and metropolitan development.
