The article discusses a series of paintings, on a vision of a modern city, inspired by the author’s recent visit to Siena, Italy. It describes an importance of architectural visions and its complementary role in relation to an architectural practice. The article presents the author’s experiences with the process of painting. It highlights the role of a quick sketch in the process of selecting and analysing a subject. Finally, it showsthe unique importance of traditional painting techniques in a realization of the subject, impossible to be replaced by a digital visualization.

W artykule omówiono cykl prac malarskich poświęconych wizjom współczesnego miasta, inspirowanych wizytą w Sienie. Opisano znaczenie fantazji architektonicznych, ich roli uzupełniającej w stosunku do praktyki architektonicznej. Pokazano własne doświadczenia związane z procesem powstawania prac. Podkreślono rolę szybkiego szkicu odręcznego w procesie wyboru i analizy tematu, a także unikalne znaczenie tradycyjnych technik malarskich w realizacji tematu, niemożliwych do zastąpienia przez wizualizacje komputerowe.

Architecture as an artform is an expression of countless emotions, perceptions and feelings. It creates an image of a real form and space, which we, the recipients may not only admire, but also use. Through exposing the effects of play with shape, light, colour and detail, architecture draws on the achievements of new technologies that offer increasing opportunities to create architectural shape, taking diverse forms adapted to the prevailing trends and tendencies. More and more visibly, architecture is turning towards nature, using principles of sustainable design and eco-technology; it surrenders to the elements of nature exhibited particularly clearly already in the Secession – the period in which floral motifs dominated both architectural details and painting, sculpture, and ceramics. Art Nouveau generated a new look at the ornamentation of architecture – its detail. Both in the past, as well as today, it is perceived as a distinct work of art – the effect of play with organic shapes, light and colour deciding on their craftsmanship and value. Apart from the detail, the play in architecture is also facilitated by colour, sound and light, as well as interactive forms co-operating with the user.

Architektura jako rodzaj sztuki jest wyrazem niezliczonych emocji, wyobrażeń i uczuć. Tworzy obraz realnej formy i przestrzeni, którą my odbiorcy możemy nie tylko podziwiać, ale również użytkować. Architektura eksponując efekty gry kształtem, światłem, kolorem i detalem czerpie z osiągnięć nowych technologii, które stwarzają coraz większe możliwości w zakresie kształtowania formy architektonicznej przybierającej różnorodną postać dostosowaną do panujących trendów i tendencji. Coraz wyraźniej architektura zwraca się ku naturze, wykorzystując zasady projektowania zrównoważonego i ecotechnologii; podporządkowuje się elementom przyrodniczym eksponowanym szczególnie wyraźnie już w secesji – w okresie, w którym motywy roślinne dominowały zarówno w detalu architektonicznym jak i malarstwie, rzeźbie, czy też ceramice. Secesja wygenerowała nowe spojrzenie na zdobnictwo architektury – jej detal. Zarówno w przeszłości jak i dziś jest on postrzegany jako odrębne dzieło sztuki – efekt zabawy organicznymi kształtami, światłem i kolorem decydującym o jego kunszcie i wartości. Poza detalem inicjatorem gry w architekturze jest kolor, dźwięk i światło, a także interaktywność form współpracujących z użytkownikiem.

Architektoniczne wizje miast od dawna zajmowały umysły zainteresowanych. W naturze ludzkiej jest myślenie o jutrze i dociekanie przyszłości, tworzenie wizji i określania prawdopodobieństwa ich spełnienia. Lata sześćdziesiąte XX w. charakteryzują się szczególnym rozwojem wizji architektoniczno-urbanistycznych w Wiedniu. Poprzedzająca nurt wizjonerski krytyka funkcjonalizmu często przyczyniła się do powstawania manifestów, wyrażających światopogląd autorów lub prezentujących stosunek do problemów ich czasów. Wizje wiedeńskich projektantów często powstawały równolegle z podobnymi projektami na świecie.

Architectural visions of cities have been on the interested parties’ minds for a long time. Dreaming of a better tomorrow and looking to the future, creating visions and defining the probability of their fulfillment are all in human nature. The development of architectural and urban visions in Vienna was characteristic of the 1960s. The criticism of functionalism, which preceded the visionary trend, frequently contributed to the creation of manifestos which expressed their authors’ outlook or presented their attitude to the problems of those days. The Viennese designers’ visions often came into existence concurrently with similar projects springing up all over the world.
