The natural sun light has always been an active factor in formation of local architectural traditions. The sun path impacts the settlement planning, building architecture, and interior zoning, comprising main elements of the architectural identity. In the folk architecture, the light played a symbolic, compositional or decorative role. In particular, eastern orientation of the altar in Ukrainian churches added symbolical lighting effects to the interior, while reflection of the sun light on church domes emphasized the magnitude of the building. The traditional south orientation of the front façade of houses actually resulted in a colorful, irregular composition of the Ukrainian village, contrast coloristic image of buildings and distinctive image of the scenery. Since the architecture of the Eastern European region is closely connected to the landscape, with the light as one of the main elements, its role in formation of the regional identity should be evaluated appropriately.

W 2014 roku zrealizowano kolejną sesję badań terenowych we wsiach Białostocczyzny. Najdokładniej zbadano wieś Nowa Wola w gminie Michałowo. Między innymi sporządzono szczegółową dokumentację inwentaryzacyjną fotograficzną i rysunkową trzech drewnianych domów wiejskich w tej wsi. Przeanalizowano specyfikę wnętrz mieszkalnych w tych domach (porównując je z wnętrzami innych domów wiejskich w tejże gminie), dostrzegając wytwory powstałe wskutek połączenia tradycyjnych wzorców estetycznych z nowoczesnymi rozwiązaniami, materiałami i „modami” estetycznymi. Taka synteza wskazuje, iż tradycyjne wzorce kształtowania przestrzeni są niejako wpisane w mentalność miejscowej ludności i trwają pomimo przemian cywilizacyjnych, a być może nawet są wspierane współczesną technologią.

Field surveys were performed in a number of villages in the region of Białystok, N-E Poland, in 2014. The most detailed ones have been done on October 17th, with the research focus on three old wooden houses in Nowa Wola, Michałowo commune. The photographs and detailed drawings have been made. The surveys and their effects have revealed the unique values of home interiors, resulting from the local vernacular tradition enhanced by the contemporary tools, materials and aesthetic patterns. In other words, the vernacular has merged with the modern. Eventually, the spatial results of that fusion proves that vernacular or traditional aesthetic and cultural patterns are fixed in the minds of local people and persist in spite of the technology progress. Moreover, they seem to be even supported by modern tools, technologies and trends.
