W okresie XVII i XVIII wieku kilku warszawskich architektów wzniosło dla siebie w mieście lub jego najbliższych okolicach stałe siedziby. Były to budowle o zróżnicowanym charakterze – dworki, pałacyki, kamienice, często z funkcjami towarzyszącymi zapewniającymi dodatkowy dochód, niezależny od aktualnego zapotrzebowania na usługi właścicieli takimi, jak karczma czy cegielnia lub lokale na wynajem. W niektórych przypadkach były to budynki – wizytówki twórczości, świadczące o pozycji zawodowej i zdolnościach inwestorów.

During the 17th and 18th centuries a few of Warsaw's architects built themselves permanent seats. These were buildings of different types – manors, small palaces and tenement houses, frequently with additional functions such as an inn or a brickyard, or premises for rent, providing supplementary profit, independent of the market's need for their owners' services. In some cases those buildings were showcases of their owners architectural work, a testimony of professional position and creative abilities of their proprietors.

In the article together with selected own houses of worldwide architects of XX century some examples of own houses of Wroclaw architects are presented. Houses implemented after 1945, selected with proper criterion are examined. An attempt is made to answer the question about the idea of home and the ways of its realization during space of time, changing opportunities and circumstances.
