During the recent years, it has been determined that major damage of hardened surfaces created out of small sized elements emerged in the mining areas, and within the adjacent buildings, which is a direct result of the horizontal deformation of the surface, leading to the soil being compacted. The basic method of avoiding such damage is to design the expansion gaps between the individual elements. The article, demonstrating the example of paving stones, also determines the rules applicable in case of such surfaces in the mining areas.
