Thermodynamics is a branch of physics dealing with matter and conversion of energy, conversion of energy into heat and work in particular. Each object of interest in engineering contains matter, therefore, thermodynamics is usually included or indirectly involved in the analysis of almost all engineering problems. Based on reversible classical thermodynamics, the transition from classical thermodynamics to engineering thermodynamics is described in the paper. Examples of application of thermodynamics in fundamental and applied sciences are presented. Then, the influence of thermodynamics on the development of modern sciences and the humanities is explained.
