We deal with a functional equation of the form ƒ(x + y) = F(ƒ(x), ƒ(y)) (so called addition formula) assuming that the given binary operation F is associative but its domain is not connected. The aim of the present paper is to discuss solutions of the equation [formula]. It turns out that this functional equation characterized an inverse proportionality type function, but if the domain of the unknown function has no neutral element. In this paper we admit fairly general structure in the domain of the unknown function.

We discuss the fuzzification of classical probability theory. In particular, we point out similarities and differences between the so-called fuzzy probability theory and the so-called operational probability theory.

Prof. Maksymilian Dryja, Chairman of the Commission of Applied Mathematics (CAM) of the Committee of Mathematics Polish Academy of Sciences (CM PAS), turned to me with a request to write the afterword to come, that I had two years ago, during the XXXIX Conference on Applied Mathematics, and which was published in Applied Mathematics, vol. 12/53, 2011, 55-58 (with some changes, not necessarily for the better). I recall that I performed with several theses on the positions occupied by the broad application of mathematics in Polish science then. Professors Stefan Jackowski and Michael Karoński preparing the draft multiannual national program for the development of mathematics, and my intention was to give the appropriate rank issues related to the application of mathematics and statistics. In addition, as a person endowed with the mandate of the academic world an elected member of the Council of Science), thought it his duty to draw the attention of Member States to the archaic structure of the mathematical sciences in Poland, a structure that does not take into account the importance of the application of mathematics and statistics in the modern world and not conducive to the development of these areas as mathematical disciplines.

After an initial discussion at the Committee of Mathematics Polish Academy of Sciences (CM PAS) meeting in February 2013 concerning the status of Applied Mathematics in Poland, I had a feeling of confusion and dissatisfaction, because it seemed to me, both to define the concepts mentioned by the panelists, like, the more standing problems, there was not sufficiently clear. Taking now the voice I have in the first place to that the slightly harden the soil considerations and, perhaps naively, to simplify issues, so as to agree not only possible initial thesis, but above all to establish basic problems discussed. Furthermore, in order to give the opportunity to more easily formulate opposite those presented below views and opinions and to raise interest in this issue the person listed below will present the thesis in a provocative categorical, although I realize that such a categorical would be difficult to fully justify and adopt. I bet that you know what it is Mathematics.

Komisja Zastosowań Matematyki (KZM) Komitetu Matematyki Polskiej Akademii Nauk (KM PAN), której mam zaszczyt przewodniczyć w bieżącej kadencji KM, rozpoczęła dyskusję o rozwoju zastosowań matematyki w Polsce. Rozpoczęcie tej dyskusji nastąpiło na otwartym Posiedzeniu KZM, które odbyło się pierwszego dnia Konferencji Zastosowań Matematyki w Zakopanem (4–11 września 2012) organizowanej przez prof Łukasza Stettnera.

W przeciągu ostatnich dwóch lat rozmawiałam z bardzo wieloma ludźmi. Jednym z podstawowych pytań dotyczących dalszego rozwoju matematyki stosowanej w Polsce jest to czy należy powołać nową dyscyplinę(y) w zakresie nauk matematycznych czy nie. Taką ewentualną nowa dyscypliną mogłaby być np. statystyka stosowana czy matematyka obliczeniowa. Zdania są podzielone. W tej notatce przekazuję moje wypowiedzi z różnego okresu tej dyskusji w kolejności chronologicznej.

In the past two years I talked to a great many people. One of the fundamental questions concerning the further development of applied mathematics in Poland is whether to appoint a new discipline (s) in the field of mathematics or not. Such a possible new discipline could be, for example. Applied statistics and mathematics calculation. Opinions are divided. The basic argument is this: ”If you summon a new discipline, it will give an impulse to the development of this kind of research in Poland. It does not bother us that maybe in the beginning only one or two departments will get permissions.” I agree with this argument except that it must appear a group of people - professionals such or other uses that his authority will ensure the quality, as well as prepare an appropriate proposal. They must be the people who really know their subject. This is the main conclusion of the discussion that took place at the Council of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Wrocław on 18 March 2014 bf I believe the same potential vote ”for” on the Committee on Mathematics is not enough - without any previous preparation exactly nothing will change. The movement is now on the wworld of applied mathematicians because all the others are generally very positive attitude.

Niniejszy artykuł ma za zadanie przybliżyć zagadnienie dotyczące transformacji Laplace’a i pokazać sposób jej wykorzystania w różnych dziedzinach: głównie jako jedno z narzędzi matematycznych służące do obliczania równań różniczkowych, ale także jako środek do uzyskania modelu układu (transmitancji) w automatyce.

The aim of the present article is to bring the issue of the Laplace transform and to show how it can be used in different fields: mainly as one of the mathematical tools used to solve differential equations and also as a means to obtain the model system (transmittance) in automatics.

Content available Uwagi o równaniu Lasoty-Ważewskiej

Praca dotyczy matematycznego modelu powstawania krwinek czerwonych, tzw. modelu Lasoty-Ważewskiej. Wykonano model równania uproszczonego Lasoty-Ważewskiej, wykorzystując pakiet programowy Matlab Simulink. Przeprowadzono szereg eksperymentów symulacyjnych, podając ich biologiczne interpretacje.

The work concernes mathematical model of arising of red blood cells called Lasota-Ważewska model. Using Matlab Simulink Lasota-Ważewska simplified equation was modelled. Many simulations were done and their biological interpretations were given.
