The plant mediated biogenic synthesis of nanoparticles is of magnificent concern due to its eco-benign and single pot nature. Here, Cinnamomum tamala (C. tamala) aqueous leaf extract was utilised for the silver nanoparticles’ (Ag NPs) synthesis. The phytoconstituents in the leaf extract were analysed by standard methods. These metabolites, especially carbohydrate polymers reduce Ag ions to Ag NPs accompanied by a reddish-brown coloration of the reaction mixture. The visual observation of intense brown colour is the first indication of the formation of Ag NPs. Various spectro-analytical techniques further characterise the Ag NPs. The green synthesised spherical Ag NPs were crystalline with an average size of 38 nm. The Ag NPs were scrutinised for antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity and obtained good results. The free radical scavenging was studied by 2, 2-Diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The antibacterial activity of Ag NPs was assessed against human pathogens, and it shown to have good antibacterial potency against a wide spectrum of bacteria. The cytotoxic activity against HEK-293T (human embryonic kidney) cell line was evaluated by 2,3-bis-(2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium-5-carboxanilide (XTT) assay. These potent biological activities enable C. tamala capped Ag NPs to be suitable candidates for the future applications in various fields, predominantly clinical and biomedical.

Cross-link method has been used to load nano CeO2, ZnO, and TiO2 on the surface of cotton fabric. Three types of nanocomposite fabrics are prepared (cotton/CeO2, cotton/CeO2/ZnO, and cotton/CeO2/TiO2) and their properties were investigated. Field emission scanning electron microscopic (FESEM) images of the samples showed good distribution of nanomaterial, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) samples proved the usage of amount of nanomaterials. On the other hand, elemental mapping was used to study the distribution of each nanomaterial separately. Antibacterial property of the samples showed excellent results against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Also ultraviolet (UV)-blocking of treated samples showed that all samples have very low transmission when exposed to UV irradiation.

Content available remote Badania bioaktywności modyfikowanego cementu kostnego : przegląd literaturowy
PL
Celem pracy jest przybliżenie aspektów związanych z modyfikowaniem cementu kostnego w celu nadania mu właściwości bioaktywnych. Przedstawiono obecnie stosowane bioaktywne modyfikacje, które mają charakter profilaktyczny (zapobiegają infekcjom), terapeutyczny (zwalczają bakterie) oraz pobudzający osteointegrację. Ukazano metody oceny modyfikacji bioaktywnych i zreferowano ich procedury, m.in. badania mikroskopowe, starzenie w roztworze Ringera, określanie dawki uwalnianej modyfikacji, pomiar strefy zahamowania wzrostu bakteryjnego, badania cytotoksyczności, przylegania i proliferacji komórek żywych, badanie pirogenności, test hemolityczny oraz badania kliniczne.

The aim of the literature review is to present the aspects related to modification of bone cement to give it bioactive properties. It presents currently used bioactive modifications, which have preventive activity (reduce the risk of infection), therapeutic activity (fight against bacteria) and stimulating osteointegration. Shows methods for evaluating bioactive modifications and discusses procedures, i.a.: microscopic studies, aging in Ringer’s solution, determination of release dose, measurement of bacterial growth inhibition zone, cytotoxicity test, adhesion and proliferation of live cells survey, pyrogenicity test, haemolytic assay, and clinical studies.
